The 2021 Melbourne Cup first acceptances have been released with 124 horses in contention to win 'the race that stops the nation'.
2020 Melbourne Cup winner Twilight Payment heads the acceptances while the likes of Verry Elleegant, Sir Dragonet and up and coming superstar Incentivise are other notable horses nominated for the $8M event.
As for the internationals, Spanish Mission looks the class factor who was last start nosed out by the best stayer in the world, Stradivarius in the Lonsdale Cup. Sonnyboyliston won the Ebor Handicap and is the other high profile international that looks set to make his way out to Australian shores.
Racing Victoria released a statement outining the notable entires for the big race, along with touching on the international gallopers who may be coming out.
“Defending champion Twilight Payment is one of six internationally trained horses that feature among the 124 first acceptors for the Melbourne Cup, in addition to high profile imports Gold Trip (Ciaron Maher and Dave Eustace) and Sir Lucan (Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott) who are yet to join their new Australian stables," Racing Victoria stated.
"The other internationals among the first acceptances are Twilight Payment’s stablemate and two-time Melbourne Cup starter Master of Reality, Rodrigo Diaz (David Simcock), Spanish Mission (Andrew Balding), Away He Goes (Ismail Mohammed) and Sonnyboyliston (Johnny Murtagh).
"Of the local contingent, Chris Waller is very well represented with 13 horses bidding to deliver a first Melbourne Cup victory for Australia’s leading trainer."
