This $1 million feature dates back to 1971 and was given Group 1 status in 1979, which was celebrated in fine style with one of Australia's best ever gallopers in Kingston Town taking out that edition.

Other champions to have won this event include Stylish Century, Tie the Knot and It's A Dundeel.

We list the early market for the 2021 Spring Champion Stakes and detail some of the key chances ahead of this October 9 feature.

Spring Champion Stakes 2021 Best Bet - Profondo

Following a more tradesman-like effort on debut, the $1.9 million colt would've gone back-to-back in the Gloaming Stakes if jockey Robbie Dolan hadn't given him a crack with the left.

That move forced the three-year-old to veer in aggressively, hence costing him the race to the more professional, but less brilliant Head Of State, who should be his only threat from that lead-up event.

Profondo was travelling like the winner prior to that and the Spring Champion Stakes does look his to lose, as he's the most talented horse in the field and one that has plenty of improvement to come.

Spring Champion Stakes 2021 Value Bet - Bulloo

If we're looking for some different form lines (outside the Gloaming) for this 2000m feature, one from a little left field could be this QLD visitor from the very astute Stuart Kendrick yard.

From the same family as the 2016 QLD Derby winner Eagle Way, Bulloo saluted first-up at Doomben before racing a little keenly when defeated by Startantes, who has since performed well in Sydney.

With the blinkers coming off, this filly took a sit and bolted in with the Toowoomba Guineas, showing a turn-of-foot a lot of these rivals don't have and she has the ability to settle close from gate five.

Spring Champion Stakes 2021 Roughie - Raging Bull

Over 1400m and off some very quiet trials, this gelding was under pressure a long way out on debut at Rosehill, hitting a big flat spot before picking up strongly in the last 100m and motoring late.

This colt was performed similarly at start two when stepping up to the 1500m, placing behind Royalzel (subsequent Listed winner) and beating home multiple winners in the process before a short spell.

Prepared by David Payne who has trained two of the last four Spring Champion winners, Raging Bull got a kill last start at Wyong and while a VRC Derby will suit more, he's a huge price for a top three chance.

Verdict

Profondo threw away the Gloaming at just start two, but can bounce in the Spring Champion Stakes.

At longer prices, both Bulloo and Raging Bull make some each-way appeal.
