The Group One Metropolitan is the premier staying contest over the Sydney Spring Carnival and forms a part of a big Randwick card which also features the Epsom Handicap and Flight Stakes.

Otherwise known as "The Metrop" is this 2400m Handicap which not only provides the winner an entry into the following autumn's Queen Elizabeth Stakes but also gives the perfect springboard into the Melbourne Spring Carnival for both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

We list the early market for the 2021 Metropolitan and detail some of the key chances.

The Metropolitan 2021 Tips

The Metropolitan 2021 Best Bet - Montefilia
This dual Group One winner rocketed into favouritism for the Metropolitan off the back of this eye-catching run from off the speed behind She's Ideel, who had the gun run throughout via the Kingston Town Stakes.

Yet to prove herself past 2000m in her three-year-old season, we will well and truly find out now whether Montefilia can run out that trip as a more seasoned and stronger mare now, who has had a more conventional lead-up.

While gate 17 isn't ideal for Bowman, they'll come in a few slots if the emergencies don't get a run and with the ability to handle all conditions, Hugh could simply just be on the best horse in the race.

The Metropolitan 2021 Next Best Bet - Entente

Another who won't be bothered with whatever the conditions are is this son of Dundeel, who is backing up for a third week in a row, which is my main query, albeit the Waterhouse & Bott yard are absolutely flying.

Entente is a galloper that I've always had a stack of time for, a gelding that was winning a Port Macquarie Cup and competing in a Geelong Cup last spring, and mainly just doing it on ability then.

Against many plodders, he's one of the few in this line up with a bit of class and better suited when he has a bunny to follow, that may just play out with Hush Writer and Spirit Ridge pushing forward.

The Metropolitan 2021 Value Bet - Warning

The 2019 VRC Derby winner isn't the easiest horse to catch, with the five-year-old breaking a long winning drought over the Brisbane Carnival via the Group Three Chairman's at Doomben.

To be fair on Warning, he's produced some cracking runs in better races, motoring home for a one-length defeat in the Turnbull last year, a super effort at WFA level, so he certainly has the class when right.

Keeping residual fitness from the winter, the five-year-old has flashed home fresh with 61kg on September 11 behind a handy Floating Artist, making the lead-up near on faultless for this Metropolitan attempt.
