An early look at the 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas, including some ante-post Classic tips.

With the 2024 flat season set to begin at Doncaster on Saturday, attention has already turned to the opening Classics of the season at Newmarket. Today, I've taken a closer look at both the 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas, picking out a couple of runners in each Classic who look overpriced.

2024 2000 Guineas Tips

City Of Troy is already odds-on to win this year's 2000 Guineas. It's hard to argue with that price when you rewatch his stunning victories in the Superlative Stakes and the Dewhurst. Second-favourite and stablemate, Henry Longfellow is likely to be aimed at the French Guineas instead of Newmarket, so there is a chance City Of Troy will go off much shorter than 4/5. Favourite backers might want to get on now.

Personally, I wouldn't back anything at odds-on ante-post and there are several who appeal at longer prices. The Middle Park Stakes hasn't been a successful stepping stone to the 2000 Guineas in recent years, but I do think there were a couple of genius contenders in this year's renewal.

The monstrous Vandeek capped an unbeaten juvenile campaign by claiming victory in the Middle Park and Simon Crisford's star will embark on a sprinting campaign this term. Staying on for second at Newmarket was TASK FORCE (20/1), who finished the race strongly having been slowly away from stall nine.

Ralph Beckett's colt won the Listed 2YO Trophy Stakes on his second start at Ripon and lost nothing in defeat to Vandeek. Task Force is by a former 2000 Guineas winner in Frankel, and out of the Juddmonte mare Special Duty, who completed the British and Irish 1000 Guineas double during her career. Classic success is in this colt's blood and Task Force will only improve when stepped up in distance.

Moving up beyond six furlongs could also help RIVER TIBER (20/1), who won the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot last summer. Aidan O'Brien's colt then went into the Prix Morny half-fit, having suffered a set-back after Ascot, and did well to finish third behind Vandeek. River Tiber then repeated that result in the Middle Park, where Ryan Moore's mount got a little outpaced going through the dip, but finished off his race nicely.

Wootton Bassett's progeny usually improve with age and progress again when stepped up beyond sprinting distances. There's eight-furlong stamina in the dam's side of River Tiber's breeding too, so I wouldn't be surprised if he joined City Of Troy in the 2000 Guineas.

2024 1000 Guineas Tips

With Opera Singer set to miss this famous Classic, Ylang Ylang will fly the flag for Aidan O'Brien in the 1000 Guineas. Ylang Ylang ended last season with victory in the Fillies' Mile, where O'Brien asked Brilliant to be the pacemaker, ensuring that the eight-furlong contest would turn into a strong test of stamina, which certainly suited the winner perfectly. Ylang Ylang looks like an Oaks filly to me.

SHUWARI (16/1), meanwhile, was keen in the early stages of the Fillies' Mile. Tom Marquand's mount worked her way into contention, but was carried right across the track by the wayward See The Fire. The fact that Shuwari was only beaten by half a length, despite plenty going against her, means she came out of that Grade One with an enormous amount of credit.

Ollie Sangster's filly beat current 1000 Guineas second-favourite, Fallen Angel when the two met at Sandown last July and boasts top-class form on the Rowley Mile. Everything in her breeding suggests that she will improve greatly between two and three. 16/1 about Shuwari is mightly appealing.

The most intriguing runner in this contest has to be ONE LOOK (12/1). Paddy Twomey's filly only ran once as a juvenile, making her racecourse debut in the Goffs Million at the Curragh. Billy Lee's mount still sat last with two furlongs to travel, but scythed through the field late on, barging past hot-favourite Cherry Blossom before putting six clear lengths between herself and the chasing pack.

When speaking to the press at the Curragh's season-opening meeting, Twomey said that One Look would begin her campaign at Cork on Easter Saturday and they would decide on her Classic target afterwards. If this super-talented filly comes through her reappearance and is pointed at the Newmarket Guineas Festival, she'll go off a lot shorter than 12/1.

Verdict

Task Force and Shuwari are our best two ante-post tips for the 2000 and 1000 Guineas.

River Tiber and One Look are also interesting in their respective races.
