The ITV Racing team will pitch up at Warwick on Saturday, ready to bring us the best of the action on Classic Chase day. The main event, the Classic Handicap Chase was first run at Warwick in the early 1970s and has long been viewed as a decent trial for the Aintree Grand National.

I've taken a look through the latest betting for this year's Classic Chase and highlighted some recurring trends, before selecting two ante-post ITV Racing tips.

2022 Classic Handicap Chase Runners

I'm a big fan of Gericault Roque, but I find it hard to fancy a six-year-old in a race as grueling as this, especially when the ground is likely to come up soft. Only one winner in the history of this handicap has won with more than 11-07 on their back, so Commodore (if declared), Corach Rambler and defending champion, Notachance could have a difficult time under welter burdens.

Paddleyourowncanoe is an interesting contender for the Skelton's. He certainly seems well-treated. Whether he'll stay this far on soft ground, however, I'm not so sure. Older horses have a good record in this race, so 12-year-old Achille has to be respected. I just don't fancy backing last year's runner-up on the back of a grueling run in the Welsh Grand National less than three weeks ago.

2022 Classic Handicap Chase Tip 1 - Jerrysback

JERRYSBACK has long threatened to win one of these big staying handicaps. Gambles in his favour have materialised on a number of occasions, but Jonjo O'Neill's ten-year-old has never managed to produce a blemish-free round of jumping.

O'Neill's charge stayed on to finish three lengths behind Regal Encore in the 2020 Silver Cup and five lengths behind Dashel Drasher in handicap company last season, after significant early mistakes put him on the back-foot. Last time out, again in the Silver Cup, mid-race mistakes proved costly for Jerrysback. After the first circuit, Tom O'Brien's mount looked to be toiling at the back of the pack, some 20 lengths behind Annsam. Yet, Jerrysback simply wouldn't lie down, eventually crossing the line just five lengths adrift of the winner in third.

It probably hasn't helped that the majority of Jerrysback's runs have come around Ascot, where runners can get punished for even the smallest of mistakes. Switching away from Ascot could be just what Jerrysback needs.

Warwick is by no means an easy test and O'Brien won't want to give the leaders too much rope. Yet, if Jerrysback can get into a nice rhythm, he looks chucked in off a mark of just 136.

2022 Classic Handicap Chase Tip 2 - Eclair Surf

I like backing front-running types in staying handicaps, so I'm also going to back ECLAIR SURF, as a strong test of stamina on soft ground is just what Emma Lavelle's charge has been crying out for.

Lavelle's eight-year-old took the transition to chasing in his stride last season. Eclair Surf hacked up on heavy ground at both Hereford and Sandown, clocking RPRs in the low 140s on both occasions.

Tom Bellamy's mount was still travelling powerfully on his reappearance in a red-hot race at Bangor, before falling at the third-last. Lavelle's stayer was still within touching distance of Iwilldoit turning for home in the Welsh National Trail, but made a horrendous error at the third-last, allowing the winner to get away from him. Considering how bad that blunder was, Eclair Surf did very well to finish in the places and the form was boosted significantly when Iwilldoit followed up in the National itself.

Although all of Eclair Surf's wins have come going right-handed, the track doesn't worry me in the slightest. The softer the ground the better as far as Emma Lavelle's concerned, as Eclair Surf looks very well treated off his current mark.
