The third and final Grade One on a stacked card at Fairyhouse on Sunday is the Hatton's Grace Hurdle. This two-and-a-half mile hurdle has been won by many of Ireland's finest hurdlers, with greats like Istabraq, Solerina, Hurricane Fly and Honeysuckle featuring on the roll of honour.
Here's our guide to the 2024 Hatton's Grace Hurdle, including our best betting tips.
2024 Hatton's Grace Hurdle Odds
Name | Odds |
---|---|
Teahupoo | 10/11 |
Lossiemouth | 11/10 |
Beacon Edge | 33/1 |
Maxxum | 66/1 |
2024 Hatton's Grace Hurdle Runners
Teahupoo turned over Impaire Et Passe to make a winning reappearance in this race 12 months ago. Gordon Elliott's star then won the Stayers' Hurdle and the Champion Stayer's in the spring, and is odds-on to make it four Grade One wins on the bounce on Sunday.
The chief opposition to Teahupoo could be Lossiemouth, who missed last Saturday's Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown. Willie Mullins' mare has only been beaten once over hurdles and, like Teahupoo, was unbeaten in three outings during the 2023/24 campaign.
Only two other runners feature in the field, and both will be saddled by Gordon Elliott. Beacon Edge returns to Ireland following a Grade Two victory at Wetherby, while Maxxum will be looking to bounce back after two poor recent efforts.
2024 Hatton's Grace Hurdle Tips
Sunday's feature boils down to a straight shoot-out between the top two in the market. Teahupoo won this race well 12 months ago, before establishing himself as the top dog in the stayers division with Grade One wins at Cheltenham and Punchestown.
LOSSIEMOUTH (11/10) should be unbeaten over hurdles. Paul Townend got in a right mess at the Dublin Racing Festival in 2023, and couldn't recover in time to reel in Gala Marceau. Since then, Lossiemouth has been flawless, winning the top juvenile races at Cheltenham and Punchestown that spring, before cruising to three easy victories last season.
Willie Mullins' mare saw out this trip well when completing the Mares' Hurdle double in the spring and nicer ground will suit Lossiemouth better than Teahupoo, who has always preferred plenty of cut in the ground. Gordon Elliott will undoubtedly ask either Beacon Edge or Maxxum to be ridden aggressively, to try and turn this into a test of stamina. Even so, I fancy Lossiemouth will have a few too many gears for the defending champion to cope with.
