Since the Hungerford Stakes was upped to Group Two status in 2006, only one winner didn't run in a Group race on their previous start, and that was Lethal Force, who was beaten in a conditions race and went on to land two Group Ones the following season.

2003 was the last time a horse won this important race having run in a handicap on their previous start. Danyah and Motakhayyel may both sit prominently in the betting here, but they have both taken the handicap route and, given 13 of the last 15 winners had Group One experience, the fact that neither has ever been tested at the highest level has to count against them.

Al Suhail brings the best form to the table, having gone down by just half-a-length in the Jebel Hatta back in March, and returned to British soil with a solid third behind Tilsit and Century Dream in the Celebration Mile. William Buick's mount looks a worthy favourite. I'm just a little unsure whether this drop to seven furlongs is really going to suit.

D'bai and Lanequash have lengthy absences to overcome, and I can't see this test of seven-furlong speed suiting the strong staying Dreamloper

Line Of Departure could be well-suited by this step up in trip but, for me, he still has a little to prove at this sort of level. Tactical hasn't kicked on since winning on his reappearance at Newmarket and Nando Parrado has been woefully out of form during 2021.

Njord was well-beaten under a welter burden at Galway last time out, but his previous performances behind Order Of Australia and Kinross mean he cannot be ruled out. While Jessica Harrington's raider does appeal each-way, I'd still rather side with SACRED, who comes into this race fresh and should relish this drop back in distance.

William Haggas' filly impressed over five and six furlongs as a juvenile, finishing second in the Queen Mary, the Lowther Stakes and against the colts in the Flying Childers.

Ryan Moore gave Sacred an excellent ride on her first crack at seven furlongs in the Nell Gwyn, where she comfortably beat Saffron Beach and Love Is You. Sacred then travelled powerfully in the 2000 Guineas, and looked to be coming with a telling challenge, only to run out of steam in the final furlong and fade back to seventh.

I was never confident a mile would suit this speedy filly, and that proved to be the case. I wouldn't be surprised to see Haggas drop Sacred back to six furlongs before the season is out, but seven furlongs here at Newbury should suit her perfectly and the stable could hardly be in better form.

Verdict

Three-year-olds may not have the strongest recent record in the Hungerford Stakes, but Sacred remains a filly on the upgrade and she can make an impact in this competitive Group Two.
