Those who haven't watched racing at Del Mar may not realise just how tight this track is. Especially the turf course, which sits inside the wider dirt track. Given it's characteristics, a low draw is often crucial, especially over shorts distances like this, and it could be very hard for horses who either like to come from off the pace or happen to miss the break.
Wesley Ward has won the last two runnings of this race and I think the best of his three runners could be TWILIGHT GLEAMING, who finished a decent second behind Quick Suzy in the Queen Mary Stakes, having made the majority of the running.
Twilight Gleaming has only run once since then, edging out Delmona to win a Listed race in France on soft ground which wouldn't have been ideal. Prior to Royal Ascot, Ward's filly clocked a strong speed figure when winning a maiden at Belmont Park by seven lengths and she could be the one to side with.

I'm also going to have an each-way saver on David Loughnane's raider, GO BEARS GO. That poor run over seven furlongs in the Dewhurst aside, Go Bears Go's form has been really strong this season, winning a Group Two and running Perfect Power close twice. He should be much more effective dropping back in trip and John Velazquez's mount is drawn well in stall three.

Being drawn out in stall six may not be ideal, but I'm still finding it hard to side against ECHO ZULU. Steven Asmussen's filly has won all three of her career starts, bolting up by four lengths in the Spinaway and seven in the Frizette Stakes last time out.
Beyer Speed Figures are a big deal in US racing, and this daughter of Gun Runner has the two fastest runs to her name. Echo Zulu proved she can handle a bend at Belmont and Joel Rosario's mount should be very hard to peg back if she breaks as well as she did on both her previous Grade One victories.

The most open race of the day, with most bookies currently offering 5/1 the field. There looks to be a lack of early pace in this Grade One, so it could pay to back TURNERLOOSE, who likes to race from the front and has been drawn well in stall four.
Brad Cox's filly went into the Grade Two Jessamine Stakes having record two easy wins earlier in the season. Florent Geroux's mount set some quick fractions early on, which set the race up for a fast closer in California Angel, who got up late to win.
Keeneland is more of a galloping track than Del Mar, so it was always going to be hard for Turnerloose to sustain her speed all the way to the line. She should be able to do that on Friday, on quicker ground over a slightly shorter trip, and she looks an excellent value bet to me at 16/1.

JACK CHRISTOPHER was my selection in the Champagne Stakes last month, so I was delighted to see Chad Brown's juvenile preserve his unbeaten record with a dominant three-length victory.
The favourite will lock horns with Corniche for the first time, who also collected a Grade One on his most recent start and boasts valuable course-winning form. Corniche has, however, been placed in the widest stall of all out in 12, with the favourite being placed perfectly in stall one. I'm expecting Jack Christopher to go wire-to-wire and land Friday's feature on day one of the Breeders' Cup.

Charlie Appleby has enjoyed his best season to date in the UK, and his strike rate with North American runners in 2021 is very, very good. Appleby has also sent out two previous winners of this Grade One, and I fancy MODERN GAMES could hand him a third Juvenile Turf winner.
William Buick's mount comes into this on the back of a powerful front-running triumph in the Tattersalls Stakes, where he kicked clear coming out of the dip to put the odds-on favourite, Trident firmly in his place. Having been drawn in stall one, I expect Buick will employ similar tactics on Friday and I've got no doubts about this step up to a mile.

It could also be worth having an each-way punt on PORTFOLIO COMPANY, despite a tricky drawn out in stall 10. Chad Brown's juvenile has finished second in decent pattern races the last twice. Flavien Prat's mount was only beaten a head by Annapolis in the Pilgrim Stakes, and he was being touted as a possible winner of this race before he was withdrawn by Todd Pletcher.
I still think Modern Games will take all the beating, but 14/1 is too big a price about Portfolio Company, so I'll be having an each-way saver.
