ITV Racing Tips - Sunday 21st February

Race 1 - Podcast Weekly Handicap Hurdle Tips

ES PERFECTO showed some good form in novice hurdles earlier in the season. Alan King's six-year-old ground out a narrow win on his hurdles debut at Warwick, and then bounced back from a fall at Exeter to follow Bravemansgame home in a winner's novice hurdle here at Newbury.

King has freshened his novice up since then, and he'll be delighted to see the word good feature in the going description. Es Perfecto remains open to progression, especially now upped to three miles.

Race 2 - Sidney Banks Novices' Hurdle Tips

Minella Drama brings the best form to the table, having won twice and finished a close second in the Rossington Main. Donald McCain's six-year-old is, however, a very quirky sort, prone to a flash of the tail when he hits the front, and I'm not sure headgear is the best way to settle him down.

Optimise Prime and Stoner's Choice both clearly have talent but remain suspect in the jumping department. The most dependable bet here is HERE COMES JOHNY, who bolted clear of the field when rounding the bend at Plumpton last time, winning by 12 lengths under a triple penalty.

Olly Murphy's six-year-old has won all three of his starts over this distance by a combined margin of 36 lengths. He also has experience around this track, having finished a good second on his only bumper start.

It's hard to look past FURY ROAD at the top of the market. Gordon Elliott's seven-year-old didn't run well at Leopardstown last time out, but the track there clearly doesn't suit this great stamp of a stayer.

Fury Road is two-from-two on heavy ground, and won a Grade Three by ten lengths as a novice around this track. Jack Kennedy would love French Dynamite to go forward and give the favourite something to aim at. Victory here would set Fury Road up perfectly for the Stayers' Hurdle.

Race 5 - Game Spirit Chase Tips

Nicky Henderson is using this race as Gold Cup prep for Champ, but I can't see how running him over two miles is going to be beneficial. Despite winning the Festival Novices' Chase last term, Champ's jumping was still rather sketchy, and running him over the minimum distance will surely emphasise those flaws.

Greaneteen looks the one to beat, but at the odds, I'd rather side with FANION D'ESTRUVAL. Venetia Williams' six-year-old has kept progressing this season, despite the fact he's finished second and fallen in races at Cheltenham, and was only fourth in the Clarence House last time out.

Fanion D'Estruval's only win on British soil came over course-and-distance last season. He's an improving chaser with plenty of natural speed, so I think the conditions on Sunday will be ideal.

There looks to be loads of pace on here. Ajero and Gortroe Joe are both keen front-runners, while Mick Maestro and Miss Heritage both like to get on with things.

This could set the race up perfectly for GIPSY DE CHOISEL, who flew home from off the pace to win on his only start in France. Daryl Jacob tried to use similar tactics on his British debut at Ascot, but he was unfortunate to run into a future Grade One winner in Metier, who kept on gamely to put the race to bed.

Despite only finishing third, Nicky Henderson would have been encouraged by that performance, and an opening handicap mark of 133 doesn't look that harsh.
