Despite the minor injury sustained by Sir Gino, ITV Racing viewers have still got an excellent afternoon of racing to enjoy in his absence. Seven strong races will be showing live from across Newbury and Warwick, including three Grade Two contests and the thrilling William Hill Handicap Hurdle.

Here are my best betting tips for Saturday's ITV races at Newbury and Warwick.

ITV Racing Tips - Saturday 8th February


1:50pm Newbury - Handicap Hurdle Tips


Stuart Edmunds hasn't had a winner since New Years Day, but I still like the chances of his progressive six-year-old MAGICAL KING (6/1) in Saturday's opener.

Having finished just behind the likes of Yes Day, Josh The Boss and Peaky Boy in novice hurdles, Magical King got off the mark at Wetherby last February. Edmunds' charge was then beaten a length by Montregard on his handicap debut, before finishing a distant third on his reappearance in a Pertemps Qualifier at Aintree, where he ran a little too freely to see out the trip.

Again, Ciaran Gethings' mount was too keen for his own good when last seen at Haydock, but still managed to see out three miles well to place second behind Supremely West. There should be enough early pace on here to allow Magical King to settle into the race and I'm confident that there's more improvement to come over staying distances.

2:05pm Warwick - Kingmaker Novices' Chase Tips


L'Eau Du Sud will attempt to strengthen his own Arkle credentials in this Grade Two. Although Rubaud does offer some value against the market leader, I'll be taking a watching brief as I fully expect the 3/10 favourite to remain unbeaten over fences.

2:40pm Warwick - Mares' Hurdle Tips


Willie Mullins has watched Lossiemouth, Energumene, Ballyburn and Kargese lose on British soil this season, so it could pay to take on Gala Marceau as she makes her seasonal bow. WEST BALBOA (9/4) comes out best of the rest at the weights and I fancy she might claim her first victory of a hugely disappointing season thus far.

Dan Skelton's mare hated jumping fences earlier in the season and disappointed on her two starts back over hurdles in December, losing by over ten lengths at both Doncaster and Kempton. Skelton's mare won her novice hurdle over this course-and-distance and she does have form on softer ground. Cheek-pieces go on for the first time too. She looks to be the one to side with.

3:00pm Newbury - Game Spirit Chase Tips


With Sir Gino now out of this Grade Two, I'm going to back the outsider of the quintet, JPR ONE (9/1). Joe Tizzard's star ran out an impressive winner of the Haldon Gold Cup on his reappearance and performed admirably to place third behind Jonbon in the Tingle Creek, considering the ground was softer than what he'd preferred. 

Conditions on Saturday should be ideal for JPR One. If likely front-runners Matata and Edwardstone cut each other's throats, Brendan Powell's mount could be there to pick up the pieces.

3:15pm Warwick - Veterans' Handicap Chase Tips


SMARTY WILD (8/1) ran very well for a long way in the Veterans Final last month. Sean Houlihan was forced to pull his mount up on his reappearance at Haydock, but Smarty Wild kept tabs on the leaders for much of that rearranged Final at Market Rasen, before running out of puff in the closing stages.

Philip Hobbs & Johnson White have campaigned their 11-year-old over three miles since entering Veteran company, but Smarty Wild has never seemed like the strongest stayer. All of his best runs came over shorter distances during his pomp. If Smarty Wild handles the ground, he's got a big chance off 125.

3:35pm Newbury - William Hill Handicap Hurdle Tips


Secret Squirrel heads the betting, following his impressive victory during the Winter Millions Meeting at Windsor. Course winner, Navajo Indy has been backed since the field was confirmed, while both Joyeuse and Favour And Fortune will likely come in for support.
