A fairly low-key weekend of racing is headlined by the John Of Gaunt Stakes. This Group Three was first held at Haydock in 1986 and a talented field of runners looks set to line up in Saturday's main event.

After ante-post favourite, Aldaary failed to feature in the final field, defending champion Kinross jumped to the head of the market. Ralph Beckett's charge was one of three 5/1 co-favourites last year, but proceeded to bolt up under Frankie Dettori and Kinross is fancied by many to defend his crown this weekend.

This year, Frankie Dettori will ride Sunray Major, who drops down in class having finished sixth in the Lockinge Stakes last time out. King Richard III Stakes winner, Happy Power and Roger Varian's Laneqash can also be backed at fairly short prices.

Karl Burke's Spycatcher will take his chance, as will Charlie Hill's front-runner, Pogo. Tom Dascombe's Misty Grey and Jane Chapple-Hyam's Catch Twentytwo complete the field for Saturday's feature.

Catch Twentytwo likes to be ridden prominently and will have to go straight to the front after landing a tricky draw in stall one. Pogo likes to go hard and fast from the front, and Kieran Shoemark will be keen to make this a strong test of stamina, seeing as his mount is a proven stayer over a mile.

With no Aldaary in the field, Jim Crowley will partner Roger Varian's LANEQASH, who remains open to plenty of improvement during his four-year-old season.

Having shaped with promise a number of times as a juvenile, Laneqash didn't make his first three-year-old start until the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury in August. Varian's charge went off at 22/1 that day, but travelled into the race nicely behind a rapid pace and stayed on well to finish a close second behind the impressive Sacred.

Crowley's mount then finished third in the Park Stakes at Doncaster, where he was hampered two furlongs out as the top two drifted across his path towards the stands' rail. Varian then stepped Laneqash up to a mile for the first time in the Joel Stakes, where he stuck to his guns fairly well to finish fourth.

Pogo finished ahead of Laneqash that day, but front-runners are often favoured on the Rowley Mile and Varian's charge wasn't able to utilise his turn-of-foot over that extended trip. Dropping back to seven furlongs should suit this strong traveller and Haydock often favours runners coming from off the pace.

Verdict

2022 John Of Gaunt Stakes

Just like last year's race, Saturday's John Of Gaunt Stakes looks wide open. Laneqash is still yet to fulfill the potential he promised earlier in his career and I think this race will be run to suit. He'll be my best bet at 15/2.
