We take a look through the betting for Sunday's main event at Punchestown and bring you our 2020 Morgiana Hurdle tips.

One of the most important races during the first half of the season takes place on Sunday, as Punchestown stages the Unibet Morgiana Hurdle. Greats like Moscow Flyer, Limestone Lad, Hurricane Fly and Faugheen have triumphed in the Morgiana Hurdle, and five horses will bid to add their name to the illustrious roll of honour on Sunday.

Willie Mullins has dominated the Morgiana in recent years, and Saint Roi will bid to hand Ireland's Champion Trainer a tenth victory in a row this weekend. Saint Roi bolted up in the style of a very good horse in the County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, and announced his intention for the upcoming campaign with a slick Grade Three triumph at Tipperary on his reappearance.

The Morgiana isn't a race Gordon Elliott has prioritised, but he travels to Punchestown with a live chance for the first time in Abacadabras. Last year's Supreme Novices' Hurdle runner-up ran in the WKD Hurdle on his reappearance, and looked the most likely winner approaching the second last, before succumbing to Aspire Tower on the run to the line.

Coeur Sublime, who represented Gordon Elliott in the Champion Hurdle last year, making his first start for Gearoid O'Loughlin on Sunday. Despite starting last season with a 15-length victory in the WKD Hurdle, Coeur Sublime struggled in Grade One company, and I'd be surprised if he was good enough to contend.

Considering he finished a nostril behind Abacadabras in the WKD last time out, Jason The Militant can currently be found sitting on 25/1. Henry De Bromhead's charge will have to take his game to a whole new level to get involved, but he has form on heavy ground and some scope for improvement.

Supasundae rounds off the field, despite running just a week ago in the Lismullen Hurdle. Jessica Harrington's ten-year-old - who only ran twice last season - must have come out of that race well to be turned out so quickly, and he's a multiple Grade One winner over the minimum distance.

With the greatest of respect to the other three runners, the 2020 Morgiana Hurdle looks to be a straight shoot-out between the top two in the market.

It's unusual for Willie Mullins to throw just one horse into the Morgiana, so he must have the utmost confidence that Saint Roi will get the job done. While I agree with the experts who've said this five-year-old is a Grade One-winner in the making, I have a couple of worries.

Saint Roi ran out a convincing winner the last day, but his principal market rivals that day were getting a run into them before going chasing, and 131-rated Tigris River finished just five lengths adrift of the winner. Heavy ground is a complete unknown to Saint Roi and he's never run around Punchestown before.

While I wasn't too impressed with the way ABACADABRAS finished in the WKD Hurdle, Gordon Elliott's charge was giving six-pounds to a very dangerous four-year-old in Aspire Tower, and he could have been in need of the run following his first outing of the season.

Gordon Elliott's charge finished a close second to Colreevy in the Grade One bumper at the Punchestown Festival in 2019. He also beat Latest Exhibition on heavy ground to secure his first Graded prize at Navan last November.

I picked out Abacadabras as a horse to follow with the Champion Hurdle in mind at the start of the season, and I'm not ready to give up on Gordon Elliott's charge just yet. Saint Roi certainly has the ability, but at their current prices, I know which one I'd rather back.

Unlike Saint Roi, Abacadabras is a proven Grade One-level performer, with experience around this track and a winning record on heavy ground. He's entitled to come on from that reappearance in the WKD Hurdle, and has the ability to beat the favourite on Sunday.
