Day two at Chester's May Festival is headlined by the Ormonde Stakes. This Group Three, run over a trip of 15-and-a-half-furlongs is named in honour of Ormonde, who became the fourth winner of the Triple Crown after winning the 2000 Guineas, the Derby and the St Leger in 1886.

The field has been finalised for Thursday's feature, and we've taken a look through the betting to find our best bets.

I thought Japan would be a force to be reckoned with throughout 2020. I tipped Aidan O'Brien's star to win the Prince Of Wales's Stakes on his reappearance. Surprisingly, Japan sweated up markedly before hand, blew the start, carted his way to the front at the half-way stage, and had nothing left in the tank at the finish.

That bizarre outing set the tone for Japan's four-year-old season. The best result O'Brien's charge managed was a third-place finished behind Ghaiyyath and Enable in the Coral-Eclipse, and he was soundly beaten on his final three starts of the campaign.

Having chosen to run Japan mainly over ten furlongs last season, O'Brien has thrust his star right up to 13-and-a-half for his reappearance here at Chester. I'm confident a test of stamina will suit him more than a test of speed, and Japan could have too much class for his rivals at Chester. However, after a turbulent 2020 campaign, I'm comfortable taking the favourite on as he makes his reappearance.

Trueshan sits second in the betting, despite the fact he has to concede five pounds to a dangerous field, over a trip that is probably a little too sharp for this talented stayer. Alan King will have both eyes fixed on the Royal Ascot Gold Cup, so I suspect Trueshan - who was well-beaten on his first start of last season - will improve for Thursday's outing.

Morando has a good record here at Chester, but looked to be slightly on the decline last season, and Andre Balding's eight-year-old would prefer the ground to be even softer than it is.

Sonnyboyliston is untested over trips further than ten-furlongs and Euchan Glen, who finished eighth of nine on his reappearance at Newbury, has to carry a three-pound penalty.

With nothing else appealing around him, I'm going to have an each-way bet on WITHHOLD, who produced several performances last season that suggest Roger Charlton's eight-year-old is still capable of winning pattern races.

After three fairly limp performances to kick off his 2020 campaign, the former Cesarewitch winner claimed a three-length victory in the Further Flight Stakes at Newmarket in July. Withhold was then beaten just a length by Trushan in a Conditions Race at Salisbury, and went down fighting to Ranch Hand in the Rose Bowl Stakes in September, where he was giving three-pounds to the field.

This will be the first time Withhold has run at Chester. Given this track tends to favour front-runners, and the fact that Jason Watson's mount has done most of his winning on left-handed tracks, I think Withhold will relish the challenge on Thursday.

There may only be two paid places up for grabs, but at 12/1, I think Withhold is an excellent each-way bet, in what looks a very winnable race.
