US horses dominated the inaugural running of the Saudi Cup last year. 2/1 favourite, Maximum Security came out on top, beating three of his countrymen and Benbatl, who was beaten three lengths back in third.

Once again, US Raider dominate the market for Saturday renewal, and it's Charlatan who tops the current Saudi Cup betting.

Bob Baffert's charge looked to have booked his spot in the Kentucky Derby with a powerful triumph in the Arkansas Derby. However, Charlatan returned a positive sample, and his disqualification meant he could no longer compete with the likes of Tiz The Law and Authentic in the battle for the Triple Crown.

Charlatan impressed in his warm-up for the Saudi Cup when romping to victory in the Malibu Stakes in December, and he has winning form over this longer distance.

Knicks Go has now won all four of his races for Brad Cox, following an impressive victory in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile with a three-length triumph in the Pegasus World Cup. Joel Rosario's mount clearly has a very high cruising speed, as he's made the running during all four of his victories, and plenty of high-quality rivals have failed to peg him back.

The leading British contender in the betting is Mishriff, who won the French Derby at Chantilly last season. John Gosden's four-year-old also has experience running in Riyadh, having finished second in the Saudi Derby last February.

Military Law has been in great form since moving from Gosden's yard to Musabbeh Al Mheiri, winning Listed and Grade Two events, while also finishing second to Benbatl and Matterhorn. The form of his recent Al Maktoum Challenge win is working out well two, as the third-placed horse beat the second in a similar event last week.

Tacitus finished fifth behind Maximum Security in this race 12 months ago, and has been running consistently since. Max Player finished third and fifth twice in the Triple Crown races last season, and he too has to be respected.

Chuwa Wizard will represent Japan, and coming into the Saudi Cup having beaten Gold Dream in the Grade One Champions Cup. The top two from November's Bahrain Trophy, Simsir and Global Giant could also make an appearance.

Knicks Go will look to draw the sting out of his rivals from the front, and I think he'll have too much pace for the British and Japanese horses.

If Charlatan can hang with Brad Cox's front-runner during the first three-quarters of the race, then he could have a kick strong enough to reel the leader in. His only previous win over nine-furlongs came in a very weak Arkansas Derby, though, and he didn't have to draw on many reserves in the closing stages, so I can't help but question his stamina.

This year's Saudi Cup isn't as strong as last year's event, which featured at least six horses rated around the 120 mark. Taking that into account, I fancy a punt on last year's fifth TACITUS at an each-way price.

William Mott's grey made up eye-catching late ground last year, and was doing his best work as he crossed the line. Tacitus was last seen coming from off the pace to finish a five-length fourth behind Authentic in a red-hot Breeders' Cup Classic, where he passed Maximum Security and Tiz The Law on the run to the line.

Tacitus produced a career-best performance to win the ten-furlong Suburban Stakes by eight lengths in the summer, and has placed three times in Grade Ones since. A very strong stayer over this trip, I think
Tacitus has the class to grind down his countrymen at the head of the market.

Tacitus is a three-time Grade Two winner, and has placed in Grade One company on a number of occasions. William Mott's grey stayed on for fifth in a strong renewal of this race last year, and he holds plenty of each-way appeal at 12/1.
