2025 Juvenile Handicap Hurdle Tips

The final handicap on day two of the Cheltenham Festival is the Juvenile Handicap Hurdle. As the name suggests, this Grade Three Handicap is only open to four-year-olds, and is often contested by those who didn't make the cut for the Grade One Triumph Hurdle run on day four.

In 2021, the Juvenile Handicap Hurdle was moved from day two to the penultimate slot on day one of the Cheltenham Festival.

Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle Winners

The Boodles Juvenile Handicap is one of the newest handicap races at the Cheltenham Festival. This two-mile handicap hurdle is open only to four-year-olds, and is usually contested by juveniles who weren't quite good enough to enter the Grade One Triumph Hurdle.

For most of its existance, this handicap was known as the Fred Winter Juvenile Hurdle. Fred Winter was a huge personality in the world of horse racing during his career, and remains the only person to win the Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle and the Grand National as both a jockey and a trainer.

Nina Carberry and Paul Nolan teamed up for the first winner of the Boodles Juvenile Handicap in 2005, when Dabiroun struck. Charles Egerton, David Pipe and Emma Lavelle also celebrated victories in this handicap during its early years.

Paul Nicholls saddled the first of his three winners in 2010. Nicholls is also the only trainer to win the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle two years in a row, with Qualando and Diego Du Charmil scoring in 2015 and '16.

Gordon Elliott has recently matched Nicholls' tally of three winners in this juvenile contest. Elliott's first win came in 2013, before 33/1 outsider Veneer Of Charm claimed a surprise win in 2018.

After Joseph O'Brien won the race in 2019 with Band Of Outlaws, Elliott reclaimed the trophy when the well-backed Aramax won at the Cheltenham Festival in 2020.

There was a big shock in the 2021 Boodles, as 80/1 outsider Jeff Kidder edged out favourite Saint Sam.
