Northern Trust Novices' Handicap Chase History

Registered as the Centenary Novices' Handicap Chase, this handicap has taken on a variety of names since it's inception in 2005.

Jewson, Chaps Restaurants Barbados and Close Brothers have all sponsored the race in recent years. In 2020, sponsorship was taken over by Northern Trust.

This handicap is open only to novice chasers rated 145 or below. Sixteen fences are jumped during this challenging two-and-a-half mile trip.

Mark Bradstock and Mattie Batchelor teamed up to win the inaugural running of this Novices' Handicap Chase in 2005 with King Harald.

In 2011, Ferdy Murphy became the only two-time winning trainer, when Divers followed in the footsteps of stablemate L'Antartique, who scored in 2007.

Two jockeys have managed to ride the winner of the Northern Trust Handicap twice. Graham Lee rode both winners for Ferdy Murphy, while Brian Hughes scored on Ballyalton and Mister Whitaker in 2016 and '18 respectively.

In 2019, A Plus Tard became the second five-year-old to win the race, cruising to victory in imperious fashion.

Kim Bailey then saddled his first Northern Trust winner in 2020, as the well-backed Imperial Aura triumphed under David Bass.
