Longchamp stages the first two Classic of the French racing season on Sunday, with a stellar cast set to assemble in the French equivalents of the 2000 and 1000 Guineas. We've taken a closer look at both races and picked out our best bets.

French Racing Tips - Longchamp Tips on Sunday 16th May

Race 1 - Poule d'Essai des Poulains Tips

Poetic Flare clung on to win the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, and Jim Bolger's charge goes for a famous double here. Kevin Manning's mount is drawn nicely in stall four and he's won on softer ground than what he faced at Newmarket.

St Mark's Basilica skipped Newmarket in favour of a run at Longchamp, presumably because Aidan O'Brien felt he would appreciate a little extra cut in the ground. The form of his Dewhurst win wasn't boosted in the Guineas, as Wembley and Thunder Moon both flopped, and he doesn't have race-fitness on his side.

In-fact, most of the horses who sit immediately behind Poetic Flare in the market don't really capture my imagination, and I feel the favourite is a little short in the betting for me. So, I'm going to take a chance and back two outsiders to cause an upset.

The first is SUMMITER, who was last seen running against the more fancied horses in the Prix de Fountainbleau, and I thought he was the one to take out of the race. Olivier Peslier's mount travelled nicely, but got boxed in on the rail from stall one. Once a gap opened on the inside, Summiter found a little extra, but still came up half-a-length short.

Christophe Ferland's three-yer-old has already won and placed third in a Listed race on the all-weather this spring. A mile seems like the perfect trip for this son of Bated Breath, and I think he could run a big race.

As could BREIZH EAGLE, who scored simple victories on his two juvenile starts at Deauville last season. Joel Boinard's stable star then extended his unbeaten record on his reappearance in the Prix Machado.

Breizh Eagle was forced wide turning in, and gave away plenty of ground by drifting even further left in the closing stages, but was still good enough to claim victory. Boisnard trained the dam himself, and the sire, Bow Creek won three Group Twos between a mile and nine-furlong. Breizh Eagle clearly knows whether the winning line is, and looks ready for this step up in class.

Race 2 - Poule d'Essai des Pouliches Tips

Mother Earth claimed a somewhat surprising win in the British 1000 Guineas. Outside of favourite Santa Barbara, who could still be anything, that didn't look a very strong renewal of that fabled Classic, and I'm keen to take Aidan O'Brien's raider on.

Philomene looked good when winning on her reappearance, but she's bred for a mile-and-a-half and could get caught out for finishing speed. It could be hard for Sweet Lady to execute her fast-finishing tactics from on the rail in stall one, and I'm not sure Miss Amulet really wants to go as far as a mile.

I'm surprised to see TIGER TANAKA sitting so far down the betting. Charley Rossi's filly handed me my biggest win of last year's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe meeting when she carried odds of 8/1 to victory in the Prix Marcel Boussac, and I'm keen to side with her again.

Tiger Tanaka was only beaten two lengths behind Gear Up at Saint-Cloud on her final juvenile start, and really looked in need of the run when second behind Sweet Lady on her reappearance. Mlle Jessica Marcialis was squeezed for room twice in the closing stages on her latest outing in the Prix Vanteux. Tiger Tanaka almost slipped up 100-yards from the line, and couldn't really have finished any better than sixth.

Rossi's star is proven over course-and-distance and progressed with her racing at two, so I see no reason why she won't produce a much-improved display on Sunday.

Verdict

I'm going for three outsiders in the French Classics on Sunday. Summiter and Breizh Eagle appeal in the Poulains, and I've also backed Tiger Tanaka in the Pouliches.
