Takashi Saido's mare is a star in her homeland. Chrono Genesis has won three of her last five starts at Group One level, and landed the Takarazuka Kinen on her latest outing in January. Her only defeats have come at the hands of Almond Eye in the Tenno Sho, and Mishriff in the Sheema Classic during the Dubai World Cup meeting.
Chrono Genesis' owners have now set their hearts on a run in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, which takes place at Longchamp on October 3rd. Sadly, her regular partner Yuichi Kitamura has suffered a long-term injury, so the Yoshida family has booked Oisin Murphy to take the ride in the Arc.
“I've always wanted to ride a Japanese horse in this race." Murphy said when the news was announced.
“She (Chrono Genesis) looks very straightforward and it’s a really huge opportunity (for me). Hopefully she stays healthy between now and October as it’s quite a long time, but this has been the plan for quite a while."
“She’s one of the best mile and a half horses in Japan, if not the best. Her form from Dubai has worked out well with Loves Only You being a winner of a Group 1 in Hong Kong on her next start.”
“It’s unfortunate that her usual jockey Yuichi Kitamura is out injured, but I’m hoping he’ll get well soon and I’ll see him in Japan in the near future.”
Murphy is a very popular figure in Japan, having enjoyed a huge amount of success when riding there during the winters of 2018 and 2019. He also helped Japan claim a famous victory at Glorious Goodwood in 2019, guiding Mitsuru Hashida's mare Deirdre to victory in the Nassau Stakes.
Chrono Genesis was cut into 12/1 to win the 2021 Arc by Betfair when Murphy was confirmed in the saddle. Snowfall tops the betting ahead of stablemate Love, with Hurricane Lane, St Mark's Basilica, Wonderful Tonight and Tarnawa also sitting prominently in the market.
