24 hours after the British Derby will be run at Epsom, French racing's equivalent of this Classic takes place at Chantilly. 19 colts will enter the stalls ahead of the Prix du Jockey Club, and it's runaway French Guineas winner, St Mark's Basilica who tops the market.

Aidan O'Brien has saddled Classic winners on England, Ireland and France already this season, so it's no surprise to see two of his best three-year-old's topping the market.

St Mark's Basilica became O'Brien's fifth winner of the Poule Essai des Poulains when he thrashed his rivals at Longchamp three weeks ago. Van Gogh won a Group One out in France last season, and has finished eigth and third in the British and Irish Guineas so far this term.

While both are greatly respected, it's hard to ignore O'Brien's wretched record in the Prix du Jockey Club. The only Ballydoyle horse to have finished better than fourth in this race is the great Highland Reel, who finished second to New Bay in 2015. Given that record, and the huge gap in the betting behind the favourite, I feel fairly comfortable taking the Irish raiders on.

Jean Claude Rouget has won three of the last five renewal of this Classic, and he trains both of France's leading contenders in the betting. Makaloun won the Prix de Conde here at Chantilly last season, and warmed up for a tilt at the Prix du Jockey Club with a comfortable victory in the Prix de Guiche.

I usually like to side with French horses on their turf and, of the home challengers, Makaloun holds the most appeal. Yet, I don't think this crop of French three-year-olds is particularly strong, so I'm going to keep faith with my selection from the Dante, MEGALLAN.

John Gosden's colt travelled really sweetly into the Dante, and found himself locked in a fierce battle with Hurricane Lane in the closing stages. Megallan eventually came out second-best, but there was no shame in that defeat and he proved he could stay ten-and-a-half-furlongs.

Gosden's colt showed signs of great ability at two, and won the Burradon Stakes in good style on the all-weather at Newcastle on his penultimate start. Olivier Peslier won't have to work too hard to slot in from a wide stall, and Megallan has the ability to outrun his current odds.

As there are 19 runners in this field and William Hill is paying five places, I'm also going to take a punt on ADHAMO. Following a superb victory in the Prix la Force, Freddie Head's charge went to post as the 5/4 favourite for the Prix De Guiche here last month.

Adhamo looked a little keen early on, and found himself sandwiched between two runners as he attempted to track down Makaloun a furlong-and-a-half out. I'm not sure whether he would have caught the winner that day, but he would have finished a lot closer to Makaloun had he not been squeezed out of contention.

Head is yet to win this Classic, but jockey Maxime Guyon has, riding the great Lope De Vega to victory in 2010. Adhome won twice over this trip as a juvenile, and certainly has the ability to challenge in this wide-open renewal.

Verdict

Mishriff landed this Classic for the stable last year, and I think Megallan offers plenty of each-way appeal at 9/1.

I'm also taking an each-way punt on Adhamo, who can bounce back after a limp showing behind Makaloun last time out.
