Happy Valley Tips January 31
Jaffe Handicap Tips (Race 3)
Happy Valley Roughie - Race 3 No. 7 Flying Romantic
This three-year-old had worked quite well ahead of his Hong Kong debut assignment over the Sha Tin 1400m, which saw Flying Romantic start as a single-figure chance.
Without threatening in an on-speed dominated race, that midfield finish on December 23 was a pass mark for the son of Dundeel, who then dropped to 1200m for start two.
Nothing went right in that January 12 tilt, where Flying Romantic played up behind the gates and from a wide alley, he settled at the rear in another race that favoured the leaders.
He was also badly checked approaching the 200m in that latest outing, so there were excuses and now from a low draw for the time in his career, he can improve at a huge price.
Luard Handicap Tips (Race 5)
Happy Valley Favourite - Race 5 No. 2 Noble Pursuit
A half-brother to a New Zealand Group 2 winner in Pareanui Bay, Noble Pursuit is a well-bred middle distance staying type, with his dam a Group 3 winner over 2500m.
The son of Savabeel found 1200m a little too sharp on debut last July and he improved off that following a spell, with the gelding contesting three 1400m races last campaign.
After a second-up victory at Sha Tin, Noble Pursuit failed when in the market third-up, however, there were reasons for that flop (blood in the trachea found in post-race scope).
The Caspar Fownes-trained galloper has been given time since last outing and with some handy trial work, along with Bowman staying aboard, they go straight to 1650m here fresh.
Jaffe Handicap Tips (Race 6)
Happy Valley Next Best Bet - Race 6 No. 9 Talents Supremo
He's no world beater, however, Talents Supremo has been racing consistently in this grade all season, with the highlight being a win over this track/trip third-up on November 15.
The five-year-old was unlucky after that, as he was held up at key stages when beaten a length on November 29, while he was ridden warm two starts back when fourth.
There was plenty of like about his latest performance, where he came from back and wide with the fastest last 800m/600m and 400m of that January 10 race to just miss the placings.
The first three home in that last event all had much softer runs and now from barrier three, Talents Supremo can ideally get a kinder time of things in transit.
Lockhart Handicap Tips (Race 8)
Happy Valley Value Bet - Race 8 No. 12 Speed Sword
Now with a Hong Kong prep behind him and coming out of some strong Class 3 sprints at Sha Tin, this Frankie Lor-trained galloper can progress in the back half of the season.
Speed Sword should've finished a touch closer on debut over 1200m and then when dropping to 1000m second-up on December 3, he was beaten 2.5 lengths up the straight.
Freshened since a plain effort over six furlongs on December 23, the four-year-old did catch the eye late when grabbing third via a 1200m Happy Valley trial on January 20.
Also, Speed Sword did bolt in when ridden cold via a Wyong victory early last year, where he was campaigning as Lim's Synergy, so he might be suited to these tighter tracks.
O'Brien Handicap Tips (Race 9)
Happy Valley Best Bet - Race 9 No. 8 Simply Maverick
We were with Simply Maverick when he saluted on the IJC meeting here on December 6, where the son of Sebring saluted by 4.75 lengths after settling outside of the leader.
Even with a 5.5kg penalty, the gelding should've gone back-to-back a fortnight later, as he was eased back in a muddling affair after covering early ground, but he still launched late.
Simply Maverick quickly atoned for that defeat, with the four-year-old recording a two-length triumph here on Janaury 10 in what his most professional performance to date.
That was only start seven for the Ricky Yiu-trained gelding, who was doing a lot wrong in early, but he's improving with racing and he brings strong figures for his Class 3 debut.
