Happy Valley Best Bet - Race 4 No. 3 Copartner Prance
Following a forgivable debut performance at Sha Tin, where he covered ground on the speed, Copartner Prance has recorded two placings and a fourth in three subsequent runs.
The four-year-old is still a work in progress for trainer Francis Lui, with the crossed nose band applied this evening after a two-length defeat last start, where he laid in under pressure.
He did look the first horse beaten in that February 18 Class 4, yet the gelding showed good fight late in the piece to hold on for fourth and a return to Happy Valley should suit him.
His best effort came on this circuit when finishing third over this track/trip at start two, where Copartner Prance raced wide on the speed and he now gets the services of Zac Purton.
Cheung Chau Handicap Tips (Race 6)
Happy Valley Value Bet - Race 6 No. 6 Ma Comet
A galloper who did show some potential in Australia when campaigning as 'Capital Theatre', Ma Comet was respected in the market via his first two Hong Kong appearances.
Those single figure quotes came off the back of some slick trial work and while it was a pass mark on debut at Sha Tin, the son of Capitalist was then a little one-paced at start two.
The post-race washup from the jockey suggested that he was looking for further and Ma Comet now gets that, with trainer Jamie Richards stepping him up to 1200m this evening.
He's since worked well in a tick-over trial and outside of a short fav who has a 4kg penalty from his last victory, it's a thin race and this sprinter could be the big improver third-up.
Ma Wan Handicap Tips (Race 7)
Happy Valley Value Bet - Race 7 No. 3 Show Respect
The main query is the distance, as he's yet to salute past six furlongs, however, the gelding covered ground via only try over this track/trip and that attempt was in stronger company.
Show Respect is now set for his second try at Class 4 level after coming back to this grade third-up on February 18, where the gelding stuck on fairly via a 1.5 length defeat.
The four-year-old was stepping to 1400m there, so there is a decent platform for 1650m now fourth-up and overall, this is the weakest race that he's contested in Hong Kong.
Although he's been competitive in eight runs here, Show Respect has lacked the brilliance to sprint over shorter journeys, so another attempt over this longer trip is worth a look.
Peng Chau Handicap Tips (Race 8)
Happy Valley Roughie - Race 8 No. 12 Gallant Hero
While he has been racing fairly well at Sha Tin of later, three of his four career wins have come at Happy Valley, so a switch in circuits won't bother the six-year-old this evening.
Gallant Hero is still looking to breakthrough at Class 3 level, although he has been competitive in five runs via this grade since taking out a 1650m Class 4 here back on November 8.
The David Hall-trained galloper has made inroads in fast-run races via his last two appearances and given he needs time to build momentum, drawing wide isn't necessarily a negative.
His peak figures are little below the top raters in this field, however, Gallant Hero is getting weight off all of those rivals and with just 52kg on his back, he's knockout chance here.
Soko Islands Handicap Tips (Race 9)
Happy Valley Next Best Bet - Race 9 No. 5 Beauty Charge
There were excuses first-up at Sha Tin, where Beauty Charge was wide and at the rear via that 1200m Class 2, while he wasn't ready fresh anyway and his starting price reflects that.
Second-up when in the market, Beauty Charge should've prevailed over this track/trip last time out, as he badly inconvenienced with at the 150m when a tight gap closed on him.
Considering the bad luck that he received at a crucial stage on February 21, the five-year-old did a superb job to recover late and after surging again, he's only missed by half a length.
A middle draw this time around will give him the opportunity to get cover and pounce late from a stalking position under Brenton Avdulla, who takes the reins for this third-up attempt.
