Topping Paddy Power's betting is The Shunter, who enjoyed a fantastic campaign in 2020/21. Emmet Mullins' star won the Greatwood Handicap and the Morebattle Handicap over hurdles, before scoring in the Paddy Power Plate at the Cheltenham Festival.
The Shunter ended his campaign with a runner-up finish in the Grade One Manifesto Novices' Chase at Aintree and a narrow defeat over hurdles at Punchestown. Mullins has his star entered in the Guinness Handicap Hurdle, but a crack at the Galway Plate looks more likely and Paddy Power isn't taking any chances.
“The Shunter is a horse with major pulling power as far as the bookies are concerned,” a Paddy Power spokesperson said.
“We’ve paid the price underestimating the Emmet Mullins-trained charge over the winter, and he could cost us dearly if he pulls off another win in whichever of the big races he goes for.”
Willie Mullins' only Galway Plate win came back in 2011, and he accounts for 11 of the 50 ante-post entries. Last year's runner-up, Royal Rendezvous could return for another crack, with Koshari and Brahma Bull also likely to be given a run.
Early Doors handed Joseph O'Brien his first Galway Plate 12 months ago, and he could throw both Top Moon and A Wave Of The Sea into the mix. Henry De Bromhead has Walk Away and Cavalry Master entered up, while Denise Foster could be represented by Battleoverdoyen and two-time Cheltenham Festival winner, Samcro.
Modus, Darasso, Off You Go and Everlastingpromise could fly the flag for owner JP McManus. Dunvegan, Assemble and Embittered are other notable names in the Galway Festival betting.
