2021 Irish St Leger Runners

Joseph O'Brien plays a strong hand in this year's Irish St Leger. Reigning Melbourne Cup winner, Twilight Payment tops the market, having won the Trial nicely last month. Vintage Crop and Belmont Gold Cup winner, Baron Samedi will also represnt Joseph, with stablemate Master Of Reality also sitting prominently in the market.

Johnny Murtagh's Ebor winner, Sonnyboyliston splits Joseph's runners in the betting. As does defending two-time Irish St Leger winner Search For A Song, who's been a little forgotten in the build-up to Sunday's main event.

Aidan O'Brien will be represented by Passion and Amhran Na Bhfiann, as well as three-year-olds King Of The Castle and Carlisle Bay. O'Brien the younger, Donnacha also has an Irish St Leger runner, with Emperor Of The Sun set to take his chance.

Jessica Harrington has JP McManus flag-bearer Barrington Court entered up, as well as stablemate Barbados. Luke Comer's duo of Aircraft Carrier and Seattle Creek round off the field, and both can be found at 200/1.

2021 Irish St Leger Tips

In the Trial, Amhran Na Bhfiann set an unsustainable pace, and Twilight Payment was on-hand to pick up the pieces. Aidan O'Brien's four-year-old will likely go off hard from the front once again, so you can see why the strong-staying Twilight Payment is favourite.

I, however, think there are a couple of runners in here who have a little more class than the favourite. Including Sonnyboyliston, who was my selection when he won the Ebor, and the form of that race was boosted when runner-up Quickthorn won at Salisbury on Saturday.

While I feel bad for deserting Johnny Murtagh's charge on Irish Champions Weekend after I backed him at 20s for the Ebor, I'm a big fan of BARON SAMEDI, and he'll be my selection.

Joseph O'Brien's four-year-old was rated just 65 when he was gelded last summer. A run of seven victories followed, the first four coming in handicaps. Baron Samedi ended his three-year-old season with victory in the Prix du Conseil de Paris, where he beat this year's Prix Ganay winner, Mare Australis by a head.

Baron Semedi picked up where he left off on his return in the Vintage Crop Stakes, beating Master Of Reality, Emperor Of The Sun and Santiago over the Irish St Leger trip. O'Brien's raider then landed a huge prize out in American, powering to a convincing victory in the two-mile Belmont Gold Cup.

Although his winning run came to an end in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, Baron Samedi lost nothing in defeat. He was merely outpaced in the closing stages by four horses who're rated between 115 and 122.

Stepping back up to 14 furlongs is definitely going to suit this strong stayer, and Baron Samedi possesses a turn-of-foot that could win him this year's Irish St Leger.

Verdict

Baron Samedi's rise has been quite incredible over the last 12 months, and he can cap his stunning rise of progression with a first Group One win. Sonnyboyliston is the Next Best.
