Less than a month after the British equivalent has taken place at Epsom, a field of talented three-year-old colts travel to the Curragh to battle it out in the Irish Derby. Horses who impress in that historic Classic often go on to run in the Irish Derby, so it's no surprise to see the betting dominated by horses who ran at Epsom.

We've taken a look through the field for this year's Irish Derby and picked out our best betting tips.

As Desert Crown eased over the line in the Epsom Derby, Westover flew home to place a close third. Ralph Beckett's Sandown Classic Trial winner found all sorts of traffic problems in running that day and did brilliantly to finish so close to Desert Crown and runner-up, Hoo Ya Mal.

Aidan O'Brien has handed a supplementary entry to Tuesday, who was last seen beating Emily Upjohn in the Epsom Oaks. O'Brien has won the Irish Derby 14 times, but Tuesday would be the first Ballydoyle filly to win this Classic.

Donnacha O'Brien has entered up Piz Badile, who could never get involved in the Epsom Derby, while the oldest of Aidan's sons, Joseph O'Brien could be represented by Hannibal Barca. David Menuisier's  Cocked Hat Stakes winner, Lionel can be backed at 10/1.

There's then a decent gap in the betting down to French Claim, who finished third in the Derby Trial at Leopardstown. Jim Bolger's Boundless Ocean and Leopardstown Trial runner-up, Glory Daze round off the betting.

Hannibal Barca ran a nice race on his first start for Joseph O'Brien in the Gallinule Stakes. Whether he's quite up to Group One standard just yet, I'm not so sure, but he strikes me as a horse who will improve throughout his three-year-old season.

While I think this trip is a stretch for Piz Badile, he's too classy to be ruled out. Lionel could play a part for David Menuisier and French Claim remains a colt I'll be keen to follow this term.

All four deserve respect. Yet, I'd be surprised if the winner didn't come from one of the two at the top of the market and I'd rather back TUESDAY over Ralph Beckett's raider, Westover.

Following her victory in a maiden at Naas in March, Aidan O'Brien wasn't sure whether Classics would be on Tuesday's radar this season. Yet, this full sister to the excellent Minding has continued to improve hand over fist in the last six weeks.

Tuesday placed in both the British and Irish 1000 Guineas, shaping like a mile-and-a-half filly on both occasions. Ryan Moore's mount was then forced to fend off the charging Emily Upjohn in the Epsom Oaks and managed to stick her neck out at the perfect time as the leaders hit the line.

Aidan O'Brien will often hedge his bets by running two or three in big races. When he runs just one, that has to be regarded as a huge vote of confidence. Tuesday will be Ballydoyle's only runner in Saturday's main event, so I'm going to put my trust in O'Brien and back the filly to beat the boys.

Verdict

Although Aidan O'Brien has won the Irish Derby 14 times, Ryan Moore has never ridden the winner. I expect that record to change on Saturday, as Tuesday is very hard to oppose.
