  • 13 of the last 15 winners were first or second season chasers
  • 13 of the last 15 winners had won over at least three miles
  • 12 of the last 15 winners had won at least twice over fences
  • 12 of the last 15 winners did not win on their last start
  • 11 of the last 15 winners were aged seven, eight or nine
  • 11 of the last 15 winners went off at 12/1 or longer (3 of the other 4 were favourites)

2021 Irish Grand National Tips - Trendsetter

The only runner in the field who ticks all eleven trend boxes is Atlantic Shore, so it could be worthwhile having a small saver on Philip Fenton's eight-year-old at 40/1.

Atlantic Shore won the Amateur National at Punchestown in January, and followed up in a stayers handicap hurdle around the same track last month. His last appearance - pulled up at Navan - is very off-putting, but if you like to follow the trends, Atlantic Shore is the one for you.

2021 Irish Grand National Tip 1 - ESCARIA TEN

Many people feel Latest Exhibition is a 160-rated chaser in the making, and the fact that he's top-weight hasn't put punters off. Personally, I feel ESCARIA TEN is every bit as talented at the market leader, and he holds plenty of each-way appeal at 14/1.

Denise Foster's charge has improved with every run over fences. Escaria Ten bolted up by 20-lengths at Thurles, before going down by just two lengths to a talented front-runner in Eklat De Rire.

Escaria Ten was last seen running in the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham. Adrian Heskin's mount jumped and travelled well, hitting the front at the second-last. Sadly, he was reeled in by Galvin and Next Destination on the run to the line, and had to settle for third. While he didn't manage to win, that was still an excellent run, as the two who finished ahead of him are horses who will be contesting Grade Ones and Grand Nationals over the coming seasons.

Foster's decision to fit cheek-pieces for the first time suggests Heskin felt his mount may have idled a little when he hit the front. That or the team want to make sure their seven-year-olds settles quickly in this large-field event. Either way, that addition could bring about further improvement, and Escaria Ten has to have a massive chance.

2021 Irish Grand National Tip 2 - MOYHENNA

The second runner I'm keen to back is MOYHENNA, who ran a screamer under 11-6 in the Irish Grand National Trial at Punchestown.

Denis Hogan's mare jumped slowly throughout and seemed to be struggling at the rear four from home. Yet, Moyhenna found her groove late in the race, and was back on the bridle between the final two flights. In the end, she couldn't bridge the gap between herself in The Big Dog, but there were just seven lengths between the two at the end of the race, and Moyhenna was giving the winner nine pounds at the weights.

Hogan's nine-year-old warmed up for a tilt at the Irish National with an outing in the Mares' Chase at Cheltenham. Moyhenna was always going to be outclassed in that Grade Two over a sharp trip. JJ Slevin didn't ride his mount to win the race, and the duo hit the line hard, just a couple of lengths behind Salsaretta in fifth.

Hugh Morgan has been called up to ride Moyhenna on Monday, and his five-pound claimer leaves her carrying just 10-10 to post - ten pounds less than what she carried in the Trial. You'll know your fate early, as she does have a tendency to start slowly. Yet, if Morgan can get Moyhenna into a nice early rhythm, she'll give you a real run for your money.

Verdict

I'm convinced Escaria Ten will be running at Grade One and Two level in the future, and he could be a big player as he makes his handicap debut off a mark of 151.

Moyhenna stayed on from the rear to finish third in the Grand National Trial at Punchestown, and carries ten pounds less on her back this time around. After a good run at Cheltenham, she can challenge for Irish National glory.
