Leopardstown Tips - Sunday 9th May

Race 2 - Amethyst Stakes Tips

Two of the last three runnings of this Group Three have been won by three-year-olds, and Epsom Derby entrant ACE AUSSIE can build on an impressive reappearance performance with a first pattern-race win here.

Jessica Harrington's colt still had plenty to do at the two-pole in the 2000 Guineas Trial here last month, but a flying finish saw Shane Foley's mount pip Monaasib for second place. The winner that day was Poetic Flare, and he went on to boost that form considerably by claiming a famous win in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Ace Aussie was beaten 15-lengths on his only try at a mile as a juvenile in the Beresford Stakes. However, he reversed the form with Monaasib - who finished a close second behind High Definition in the Beresford - and a look through Ace Aussie's breeding tells you he should have no trouble seeing out a mile, and even further in time.

Race 3 - Irish 1,000 Guineas Trial Tips

Joan Of Arc is probably the most appealing of the more experienced runners. However, with none really standing out, I think one of the once-raced fillies might come to the fore, and I've just edging towards SHANDRA over Acanella.

Dermot Weld's filly made her debut at the Curragh last year, cruising home down the outside of the field to seal a snug one-and-a-half-length success. A half-sister to dual-Blanford Stakes winner Shamreen, and by the great Sea The Stars, Shandra clearly has a bright future ahead of her.

Race 4 - Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes Tips

Jim Bolger's Vertem Trophy winner, Mac Swiney makes his triumphant reappearance in this Derby Trial, and a strong showing here would see the team head to Epsom for the Derby. Mac Swiney finished nine of ten on his only start at Leopardstown last season, and I think he'll taste defeat again on Sunday.

BOLSHOI BALLET returned to action with an impressive win victory in the Ballysax Stakes. Ryan Moore's mount travelled powerfully that day, and just seemed to be getting going in the last couple of furlongs.

To win that easily, at a time when the Aidan O'Brien's horses aren't running that well first time out, marked that down as an excellent showing. Bolshoi Ballet will take some stopping this weekend.
