Punchestown Tips - Saturday 1st May

Race 1 - Cross Country Chase Tips

STAND UP AND FIGHT was backed into favouritism ahead of the Le Touche Cup on Thursday. Enda Bolger's charge was working his way into the race nicely until a slow jump at the third last, and couldn't muster the strength to finish any better than third after that.

Dropping from 34 to 24 furlongs will certainly suit a horse who ran two days ago and has never won a chase further than three miles and a furlong. Derek O'Connor rides again, and he looks the one to beat.

Race 2 - Colm Quinn Handicap Chase Tips

SE MO LAOCH has only had four starts this season, finishing second over hurdles here at Punchestown, while also running well enough to place in two three-mile handicap chases on his two most recent runs.

Brian McMahon's ten-year-old won the Amateur National on good ground around this track in 2019, the second of his two wins around Punchestown. Se Mo Loach also finished sixth in this race that same season, and after a consistent-but-light campaign, I wouldn't be surprised to see him improve upon that result.

Race 3 - Mares Champion Hurdle Tips

Willie Mullins trains the top three in the betting here and, given how the first four days of the Festival have played out, they're likely to dominate. Stormy Ireland and the returning Burning Victory are respected, but I can't see past CONCERTISTA.

Paul Townend's mount saw off Roksana after the last in the Mares' Hurdle at Cheltenham, only to get collared on the line by Black Tears. I feared the uphill finish at Cheltenham would find Concertista wanting, which is why I backed Roksana. Good ground around Punchestown will be much more suitable, and I'm not prepared to side against her this time.

Race 4 - Champion Four Year Old Hurdle Tips

Three of the top four from this year's Triumph Hurdle clash again in the final Grade One of the meeting. Quilixios came out on top that day after an enterprising ride by Rachael Blackmore. Despite having only one prior run under his belt, Haut En Couleurs ran a cracker to finish second.

My selection on the day was ZANAHIYR, who went on to run a bizzare race. Jack Kennedy took a tight grip on the reigns throughout that day, as Zanahiyr looked a little buzzy. The favourite then faded out of contention as the leaders hit the rising ground, only to take off again after the final flight and finish within five lengths of Quilixios.

Denise Foster has endured a terrible week, failing to land a single winner thus far. While the stable form is clearly a worry, I remains confident that Zanahiyr is the best hurdler in this field and faster ground will definitely be to his liking.

Race 5 -  Pat Taaffe Handicap Chase Tips

I fancy a small bet on MUSICAL SLAVE, who won the Adare Manor Handicap Hurdle at this meeting in 2019. Since then, Philip Hobbs' charge has only won one of his nine starts over fences, but has shown enough to suggest he's very well-handicapped running off 128 and could be rejuvenated on his return to Punchestown.

Another wide-open handicap, where a case can be made for most near the top of the market. All eyes will be on seasonal stars The Shunter and Chatham Street Lad, but I'm going to take a punt on one at a much longer price.

GOODBYE SOMEDAY failed to win over hurdles last season. John Kiely's seven-year-old returned in the summer and has managed to win three times since then, while also placing in three Graded contests. Goodbye Someday has been dropped three pounds in the handicap, despite a narrow defeat in a Grade Three on his last start, and he clearly has the quality to run far beyond his odds.

This really is a "stick a pin in it" sort of race. It wouldn't surprise you if any of the 16 entrants went and won. I might have a small bet on SOMETHING SWEET - who's been running consistently over fences without getting any rewards, and could be a danger returning to hurdles off this mark - but it would only be a very small, each-way bet.

Race 8 - Buggyman Flat Race Tips

Guily Billy cost Cheveley Park a pretty penny after winning a point-to-point, and he's certainly respected. However, it would be fitting if Willie Mullins - who's dominated all week - ended on a winning note, with a horse who shares his first name.

Patrick rides WILLIE THE COO, a full brother to Panic Attack, who won a Listed Mares' Bumper at Market Rasen by ten lengths on her debut for Willie in 2019. A tongue-tie has been fitted for this four-year-old's debut, and it wouldn't be a shock if he was good enough to win first time out.
