South African Racecourse Guides
Along with cricket and rugby, horse racing is one of the most popular sports in South Africa. Racing first took place on the continent in the late 1700s and lucrative flat races are run at venues around the country throughout the calendar year.
There are around 30 Group One races that take place in South Africa. Most of the best races in the country are run on turf, but you do get some high-profile contests staged on the sand track at Vaal and on Fairview's all-weather Polytrack.

Track History
Horse racing has a deep-rooted history in South Africa, spanning over two decades. The oldest racecourse on the content is Kenilworth Races, situated on the south coast of the country in Cape Town.
In the capital, Johannesburg, the most famous racetrack is Turffontein. This course was built back in 1887 and many of the continent's most famous races are held at this venue.
Track Characteristics
As with any racecourse in the world, the racing tracks in South Africa all have their own distinguishing features. Kenilworth, for example, houses three different tracks within the racecourse - two turning tracks and a six-furlong track for high-profile sprint races.
The track at Greyville turns sharply right-handed, meaning an inside draw and a prominent early position can prove advantageous. Turffontein and Scottsville are both testing tracks, but both provide a very fair test of a horse's ability.
Major Meetings
The biggest event in South African horse racing is the Durban July. This mile-and-a-half handicap is staged at Greyville racecourse in Durban and a fantastic prize pot of R5m will be shared amongst this year's runners.
Both the Queen's Plate and the Cape Town Met are run at Kenilworth racecourse in the early weeks of the calendar year. The Cape Town Derby is run at Kenilworth during January, with the South African Derby going off at Turffontein in April.
