UAE Racecourse Guides
The United Arab Emirates boasts a long affinity with the sport of horse racing. Many of the sport's leading owners and benefactors are based in the UAE, including Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, who founded Godolphin Stud and owns Darley Stables.
Sheikh Mohammed organised the first official horse race that was staged in Dubai back in 1981. In 1992, the Dubai Racing Club helped develop the sport in the UAE, and horse racing quickly established itself as the most popular spectator sport in the region.

Track History
Nad Al Sheba Racecourse is the oldest racecourse in Dubai, having been built in 1992. In 2010, the state-of-the-art Meydan Racecourse was opened, and it soon replaced Nad Al Sheba as the home of horse racing in the UAE.
In recent years, horse racing has spread to other regions of the UAE. The lucrative Saudi Cup was first held at Riyadh Racecourse in 2020. Later that same year, Rashid Racecourse staged the first running of the Bahrain International Trophy.
Track Characteristics
Meydan Racecourse features both a dirt and a turf track. Both courses are wide, flat, oval-shaped courses, with long sweeping turns.
Given the long home straight at Meydan, it is possible for horses to make up late ground and win from off the pace. Generally, it pays to be up with the speed though, as front-runners can be hard to peg back.
Major Meetings
The most famous meeting in UAE horse racing is the Dubai World Cup Carnival. Between December and March, Meydan Racecourse stages racing on a weekly basis, staging a wide range of Group races and lucrative handicaps.
The Dubai World Cup Carnival culminates with Dubai World Cup Night, held at Meydan at the end of March. $30m in prize money will be handed out during the card, as lucrative races like the Dubai Turf, Sheema Classic and Dubai World Cup are played out.
