Watch City Of Troy gallop at Southwell today, as Aidan O'Brien's star prepares for a tilt at the Breeders' Cup Classic.
Despite the all-weather track not staging a racing fixture, Southwell Racecourse will welcome a large crowd through their gates this afternoon. Instead, the red carpet has been rolled out for City Of Troy, who has travelled to Nottingham for a gallop on their synthetic track.
Having returned to action with an under-par performance in the 2000 Guineas, City Of Troy has since established himself as the sport's top three-year-old. O'Brien's colt won the Epsom Derby and the Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown, and was last seen smashing the track record at York in the Juddmonte International Stakes.
In the immediate aftermath of that victory at York, Aidan O'Brien was asked about plans for City Of Troy. Entries had been made for the Champion Stakes and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, but O'Brien has since stated that City Of Troy's final assignment will be the Breeders' Cup Classic.
Coolmore has been craving a stallion with both turf and dirt victories on their CV for some time now. The great Giant's Causeway almost won the Breeders' Cup Classic in the year 2000, and no Ballydoyle horse has matched or bettered that achievement since.
