Sprint Cup favourite Shaquille has undergone extra stalls training, ahead of his tilt at a third Group One victory at Haydock.

Shaquille performed a minor miracle when winning the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot. Julie Camacho's star dragged himself out of the gates, giving the field a lengthy headstart, before powering back into contention and kicking clear to win by length and a half.

Again, in the July Cup at Newmarket, Shaquille had trouble at the start. Rossa Ryan's mount reared coming out of the gates and pulled himself into an early lead. Yet, despite expending plenty of energy with his early antics, Shaquille managed to find an extra gear in the final furlong to claim another comfortable victory.

Since that second Group One victory, Camacho and her team have been busy preparing their stable star for the Sprint Cup at Haydock.

“He is in good form, everything’s going to plan for a week on Saturday at Haydock.” said Steve Brown, assistant and husband to trainer Julie Camacho.

“He had a little rest after the July Cup, which was always our intention, he’s done two bits of work to his normal standard – he’s not a flashy worker at home."

In a bid to cure his problems at the start, Brown revealed that Shaquille had been subjected to extra training stalls training and a rug will likely be used at Haydock Park.

“I had a chat with Craig after Newmarket because we thought Ascot was a one-off, but then it wasn’t, so we needed to do something to try to make him jump out more convincingly."

“He was loaded with a rug and before he jumped out the rug was taken off, it certainly worked on Thursday. He jumped out and looked pretty convincing, hopefully that will be the case when he goes to Haydock."

“It is all about your use of energy, it’d be nice if he could get out smoothly and we’d really see what he can do then.”

Oisin Murphy and Rossa Ryan have guided Shaquille to Group One success this term. James Doyle, however, had partnered Camacho's top sprinter on his first couple of winning starts this term and Brown has stated that Doyle remains the team's first choice.

“James has always been our first choice since the start of the year, we haven’t discussed it fully but I think he’d be our first port of call – we’ll see what his availability is and go from there.”

Shaquille is best priced at around 6/4 to win the 2023 Sprint Cup, the full betting for which can be found here on our website.
