Racing fans from across the world tuned in to watch the Longines World Racing Awards ceremony on Wednesday evening, and it was Ghaiyyath who walked away with the top prize.
Charlie Appleby's five-year-old enjoyed a stunning campaign in 2020. Ghaiyyath carried the Godolphin silks to victory in the Coronation Cup, the Coral-Eclipse Stakes and the Juddmonte International Stakes. His only defeat came on his first visit to Leopardstown in September, where Ghaiyyath was beaten in the Irish Champion Stakes by Magical.
Despite that loss, Longines handed Ghaiyyath a rating of 130, making Appleby's star the highest-rated racehorse in 2020.
"It's a great privilege to be involved with a horse like Ghaiyyath." Appleby said during the ceremony.
"Right from the start he's been one of the horses we've been most fond of and to train a horse like this for His Highness Sheikh Mohammed is an honour.
"The 2020 season was a year in which we felt as if he was the finished article. He started with a devastating performance in the Dubai Millennium at Meydan and then came into the European season both mentally and physically ready to go to war.
Authentic, winner of the Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic in 2020, finished runner-up to Ghaiyyath with a rating of 126. John Gosden's stayer Stradivarius ended the year rated 125, as did Champion Stakes winner Addeybb.
Australian pair Bivouac and Classic Legend also ended 2020 with a Longines rating of 125, along with Belmont and Travers Stakes winner Tiz The Law, and three-time Grade One winner in France, Persian King.
The 2020 Juddmonte International Stakes, held at York during their Ebor Festival, was named the best Grade One staged during 2020.
Ghaiyyath ran out a superb winner, beating Magical, Prince Of Wales's Stakes winner Lord North, and 2000 Guineas hero Kameko by three lengths.
"His victory in the Juddmonte was the most pleasing for me." Appleby continued.
"I felt that it confirmed what we'd seen in the Eclipse when he beat Enable. Some may have thought it was the luck of the run at Sandown, but he went and confirmed it all at York."
