Jonbon was slashed in the betting for the 2023 Arkle, following a superb win on his chase debut at Warwick.

JP McManus splashed out £570k to buy this full-brother to two-time Cheltenham Festival winner Douvan. Nicky Henderson's recruit performed well as a novice hurdler last season, following Constitution Hill home in the Supreme before a Grade One victory of his own at Aintree in the spring.

The team always felt that Jonbon would be even better once he faced a fence for the first time. That moment finally came at Warwick earlier this week, and Henderson's budding star certainly didn't disappoint.

Aidan Coleman sent Jonbon straight to the front and his jumping was smooth and fluent. Monmiral, formerly a two-time Grade One winning juvenile, tried to keep up with the favourite in the early knockings. Paul Nicholls' charge cried enough going down the back straight and Jonbon didn't relent, pinging the final two flights as he cantered to victory.

Having missed Cheltenham's November Meeting through illness, Nicky Henderson was present at Warwick to watch his star novice. When asked by Sky Sports to rate Jonbon's winning performance out of ten, Henderson replied "Well it has to be nine and a half, doesn't it?"

"It's a relief and it's what we hoped for." Henderson continued. "He's a pretty reliable friend and that is what we all hoped was going to happen."

"He was long at the ditch, but was still way out the other side, and then at the next one he shortened, danced and was away. At two fences he showed he can do both and at the rest of them he was fantastic."

"They went a good gallop. Most of ours are taking a run and I don't see why he would be any different, but if he was fit enough to do what he had to do today."

Jonbon already sat prominently in the betting for the Arkle Challenge Trophy, a race Nicky Henderson has won with Shishkin and Altior in recent seasons. Both returned odds-on prices when winning that Grade One on day one of the Cheltenham Festival and Jonbon is closing in on a similar price, having been slashed into 2/1 already by bookmakers Unibet.

Shishkin and Altior had their final outings before the Arkle in the Desert Orchid Novices' Chase at Kempton's Christmas Festival. That race is a possible target for Jonbon, but Henderson revealed at Warwick that the Grade One Henry VIII Novices' Chase at Sandown on Tingle Creek day was his preferred target.

"The timing was always difficult because we couldn't find the ideal race. The plan is the Henry VIII at Sandown (on December 3), but it is quite tight." Henderson said.

"Luckily he didn't have a hard race, but bear in mind these good horses don't do this without putting a lot into it and he is on his nerves and sweats a bit - he puts everything in.

"The idea would be the Henry VIII and I've got two and a half weeks, so hopefully that takes us into there."
