Read quotes from the connections of the four horses who galloped out at Epsom on Tuesday morning.
Ralph Beckett's Macduff and Roger Teal's Dancing Gemini got a feel for the tricky track at Epsom Downs ahead of their tilts at the Epsom Derby. Richard Hannon's Voyage and Deira Mile, ridden by Jim Crowley, also took to the track on Tuesday.
Here's what connections had to say following Epsom's morning gallop.
2024 Epsom Derby Quotes
Ralph Beckett on Macduff and his Oaks plans
"Macduff is a straightforward customer and this was just to give him an away day as much as anything as he hasn't run since the end of April."
"Whether he's good enough is the question but he's the sort of horse to bring back here in ten days time in terms of his make-up, and we're pretty hopeful if not confident that we'll get the trip. He looked a model pupil today but I was astonished to see he's 16-1. I was expecting double that but if we get him here in one piece we'll see."
"We're keen to run both trial winners (In the Oaks) You Got To Me and Forest Fairy, and we're also keen to run Seaward who has come forward from Chester, noticeably so. We'll wait on making a decision on Classical Song, while Treasure is only 40-60 for the race and is more likely to wait for the Ribblesdale."
Roger Teal on Dancing Gemini
“We’re gonna roll our sleeves up and come here. He ran only nine days ago, but the point (of coming to Epsom today) was to give him a feel of the layout of the track. I was very happy.”
“We wanted to come here to find out whether he’d handle the track, because he’s never been down a dip before, he’s always been on flat tracks. He went round beautifully, so that was when we made the decision.”
Richard Hannon on Voyage
"He couldn't have done more than what he did in that novice. He's coming here on the back of a win."
"We didn't come here to see how good he is. We don't know how high the bar is or how high he can go, but he’s a good horse."
“He took me by surprise with the way he kept going (on debut) after being so keen – he must be a decent horse to have done that."
Jockey Jim Crowley after riding Deira Mile
"He must have a chance as it's hard to say what is going to win the Derby this year. He won his Windsor novice in good style and is still a baby and he should get the trip. He gave me a nice feel this morning."
After kicking clear of his pacemaker in the closing stages, Boylesports clipped Deira Mile into 40/1 from 66s in their betting for the Derby.
Voyage was trimmed into 25s from 33/1 following his pleasing workout. Dancing Gemini and Macduff were already much shorter in the betting than either Deita Mile or Voyage, and they remain 14/1 shots with Boylesports.
Meanwhile, Aidan O'Brien told Betfred that City Of Troy and Ylang Ylang are his main hopes for the Epsom Classics. Rubies Are Red will join Ylang Ylang in the Epsom Oaks, with Los Angeles and Illinois likely to enter the Derby alongside City Of Troy. Last year's Derby winner, Auguste Rodin will return to Epsom for the Coronation Cup.
