St Mark's Basilica saw his odds slashed for the 2021 2000 Guineas, after heading a 1-2 for Aidan O'Brien in the Dewhurst Stakes.

Aidan O'Brien had been enduring an uncomfortable Future Champions Festival at Newmarket, up until this afternoon's Dewhurst Stakes. Not only had the master of Ballydoyle watched Kyprios and Van Gogh suffer defeat, but he'd also been forced to apologise after yesterday's Fillies' Mile, following a number cloth mix-up involving his two runners in that Group One.

An unusually quiet season with his juveniles meant that O'Brien's runners in the Dewhurst Stakes, Wembley and St Mark's Basilica sat some way off market leader, Thunder Moon heading into the race. A small sway of support came for Wembley before the off, but all eyes were on runners for the Joseph O'Brien, Richard Hannon and Jessica Harrington as the stalls burst open.

As the runners around him came off the bridle, the stage looked set for Thunder Moon to claim a second successive Group One win. However, Joseph O'Brien's National Stakes winner was passed by the two who filled the places behind Thunder Moon at the Curragh, and it was St Mark's Basilica who edged out Wembley to score at Newmarket.

Following the race, Frankie Dettori was in no doubt that his mount would comfortably get a mile. That resulted in many bookmakers slashing St Mark's Basilica's odds for the 2021 2000 Guineas, with William Hill going as short as 8/1 favouritism.

Fellow Ballydoyle inmate, Battleground hasn't been seen since winning the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood, but he remains at the head of the market with most firms.

Wembley has now finished second in two successive Group Ones over seven furlongs. He too was backed for the 2000 Guineas on the back of the Dewhurst, with William Hill listing O'Brien's runner as their 12/1 joint-third favourite.

Thunder Moon, who had been the 2000 Guineas favourite, clearly didn't enjoy the tacky ground on the Rowley Mile, and drifted back to 10/1.

Chindit saw his unbeaten run come to an end in the Dewhurst, and Richard Hannon's colt drifted out to 12/1 in William Hill's 2000 Guineas betting. Cadillac remains a 14/1 shot following a decent showing in the Dewhurst. National Stakes fourth, Master Of The Seas can be found at those same odds.

*William Hill's 2021 2000 Guineas Betting*
8/1 St Mark's Basilica, Battleground, 10/1 Thunder Moon, 12/1 Wembley, Chindit, 14/1 Master Of The Seas, Cadillac, 16/1 Bar
