Stradbroke Handicap Tips & Betting Predictions

The Stradbroke Handicap is considered to be the highlight of the Brisbane Winter Carnival and it runs this Saturday at Doomben.

A Group 1 sprint race in Australia, the Stradbroke Handicap always attracts a high-quality field and the 2018 edition is no different. A maximum field will line up for the $1.5 million prize and we think a three-year-old star could steal the show.

Champagne Cuddles hasn't been well-weighted this season when carrying 55kg against open class thoroughbreds but she drops down to 50kg for the Stradbroke Handicap and that makes her tough to beat.

The three-year-old filly by Not A Single Doubt showed her worth when running third behind race-rival Impending last start but she meets the Godolphin runner much better at the weights this time around and there are more positive factors for betting on the current 4.40 chance.

Trained for Bjorn Baker, Champagne Cuddles gets the inside draw which will ensure she settles on the pace and that's a position she has enjoyed throughout her nine-start career. She won by a length at Gold Coast to kick off this campaign and she was able to settle on the speed and give a good kick in the straight.

The threat to Champagne Cuddles could come from Osborne Bulls. The James Cummings-trained gelding has been patiently-handled throughout his career and he now gets a chance to shine on the big stage.

He's a four-year-old which has won seven of his 10 starts and finished in the money at his other three attempts. All of his wins have come when rising through the grades and getting that winning experience could be key to his success here.

It's uncommon for a Godolphin-operated runner to be held back from Group 1 racing, but Osborne Bulls is a special thoroughbred and he could unleash his talents at Doomben on Saturday.

We can't leave out stablemate Impending after his win in the Group 1 Kingsford-Smith Cup last start. The four-year-old has plenty of experience with 17 runs under his belt and he has won more than $2.3 million in prize money.

The son of Lonhro showed a good turn-of-foot to score at Doomben last start and despite conditions being much harder here, his class will take him a long way.

Expect Impending to be in the thick of the action at each way odds of 5.50.

Best Bet: Champagne Cuddles to win at 4.40
