Kenilworth and Turffontein host good cards today, with the first race going off at Turffontein at 10:45am (UK Time). To help you try and find a few winners, here are Magic Tips' South African Horse Racing betting tips for today.
Turffontein Tips - Saturday 18th May
Race 1 - VIBE SA (1)
VIBE SA produced a good first run for the Tony Peter stable. He ran on well to finish second behind So Seductive. It must be noted that the horse that finished third that day has come out and won since. The son of Just As Well would have come on from the run and should strip much fitter. The blinkers have been re-fitted and he can go one better.
Race 2 - WHAT A LUCY (2)
WHAT A LUCY produced an encouraging comeback run over 1000m on the Vaal Classic course. She showed good speed and was reported to be distressed post-race. The daughter of What A Winter would have come on from the run and should strip much fitter. She meets the right field and may find herself in the winner’s enclosure.
Race 6 - DOUGLAS DRAGON (2)
DOUGLAS DRAGON has shown good improvement in his last two starts with the blinkers fitted. He challenged strongly in his last start, but found one too good in the form of Dark Silver. Piere Strydom retains the ride and he can go one better.
Race 8 - VIVA BRAZIL (3)
VIVA BRAZIL lacked extra late in the Grade 1 TAB SA Derby last time. It must be noted that the horse that finished second that day has come out and won since. He takes a drop back in class today. With a bit of luck from the widest draw, he can notch up his fourth-career victory.
Race 9 - THUNDERSTRUCK (1)
THUNDERSTRUCK is the best bet on the programme. He was given a peach of a ride when winning the Grade 1 Jonsson Workwear Computaform Sprint last time. The son of Rafeef is the class horse in this race and he should take a power of beating.
Kenilworth Tips - Saturday 18th May
Race 2 - EIGHT ON EIGHTEE (10)
EIGHT ON EIGHTEEN has produced two good runs to date. He stayed on when third over this C&D last time. The son of Lancaster Bomber meets the right field and Richard Fourie may be able to get the best out of him where it matters most.
Race 3 - DIXIELAND BAND (4)
DIXIELAND BAND raced from a handy position over this C&D last time, moved up but was outrun late by Babelicious. She is in a good space and from her good draw of four, she may be the one to side with.
Race 4 - BE MERRY (6)
BE MERRY made the expected natural improvement when second in her last start over 1000m on this course. She showed good speed, but was caught late by Furious Queen. The daughter of Lancaster Bomber is a progressive type and if seeing out the extra furlong on offer, she may find herself in the winner’s enclosure.
Race 6 - STEADFAST (4)
STEADFAST won a good race in his last start over this C&D. The manner in which he quickened up and drew off in the closing stages was encouraging. He meets a similar line-up this afternoon and can follow up.
Race 9 - DAIMYO (5)
DAIMYO fought hard for his maiden victory over 1600m on this course. It must be noted that the horse that finished fourth that day has come out and won since. He finished 0.4 lengths behind Blue Bay, three runs ago. He is 3kgs better off at the weights today and that should be enough for the tables to be turned. He has plenty of scope and can follow up with another victory.
Verdict
Be Merry (Race 4) is Magic Tips' best bet at Kenilworth on Saturday. Over at Turffontein, Thunderstruck (Race 9) is the NAP of the day.
