Politologue took advantage of some late withdrawals and below-par performance from Defi Du Seuil to claim an emphatic win in the Champion Chase last season. Paul Nicholls' chaser produced a dominant display to beat Greaneteen in the Tingle Creek on his reappearance, and he's an even-money shot to win the Clarence House later this month.
Defi Du Seuil was terrible again on his reappearance in the Shloer Chase, and Philip Hobbs was forced to give his stable star a lengthy break. The two-time Cheltenham Festival winner claimed his seventh career Grade One when beating Un De Sceaux here last year, and would be a big player if back on song.
Duc Des Genievres has finished second and third on both of his starts in Grade Twos this season. The winner of an Arkle when trained by Willie Mullins, he could join stablemate Politologue in the field at Ascot.
Venetia Williams could throw Fanion D'Estruval into Grade One company for the first time. Charlie Deutsch's mount fell when challenging in the Peterborough Chase when last seen, and looks to have improvement left in his locker.
Kim Bailey's has handed First Flow an entry, and he'll be going for his sixth win on the bounce at Ascot. Riders Onthe Storm could also run, but he will likely be saved for the Ascot Chase next month.
Sizing Pottsie could make the trip over from Jessica Harrington's yard. Espirit Du Large has fallen on three of his last four starts, but he too could step back up into Grade One company.
Bun Doran and Le Patriote have also been handed a Clarence House Chase entry. As has Benatar, who finished third in the Caspian Caviar after 700-days off the track.
