One of the most important races of the season takes place at Sandown on Saturday, with a field of seven set to line up in the 2021 Coral-Eclipse Stakes. The Eclipse offers three-year-olds their first opportunity to tackle older horses in Group One company, and this clash of generations makes the Coral-Eclipse a truly unmissable race.

Here's our guide to this year's Coral-Eclipse.

A disappointing field of just five runners will go to post in Saturday's big race at Sandown, with both Wonderful Tonight and Armory highly unlikely to run if the ground stays as it is.

Mishriff had initially topped the betting, but he's been replaced by St Mark's Basilica over the past 48 hours. Aidan O'Brien's charge has won two Classics on French soil so far this season, and Ryan Moore's mount will be getting ten pounds from his older rivals at the weights.

David Egan jumps back into the saddle of Mishriff, having ridden John Gosden's star to victory in both the Saudi Cup and the Sheema Classic.

Addeybb also represents the older brigade, and he'll be looking to build on another sparkling Group One triumph down-under. Japan finished third behind Ghaiyyath and Enable in last year's Eclipse, and he returns for another crack.

The final runner is El Drama who, like the favourite, will be getting stacks of weight from his elders. However, judging by his performance in the Prix Du Jockey Club, where he finished 23 lengths behind St Mark's Basilica, he'll need all the help he can get.

Despite that ten-pound pull at the weights, I'm not convinced that this year's Classic generation is as strong as some we've seen in recent years. With that in mind, I'm going to side with MISHRIFF.

John Gosden's colt has proven an unlikely money-spinner in the past 18 months. Mishriff won the 2020 renewal of the Prix Du Jockey Club last season, before those globe-trotting exploits in the UAE.

David Egan's mount bolted up at Newmarket on the back of a similar break last season, and won the Saudi Cup having not run for 126 days back in February. Mishriff clearly goes well fresh and he's won big races on both fast and heavy ground.

Verdict

The stronger St Mark's Basilica gets at the top of the betting, the more appealing Mishriff's price gets. For me, he's the one to beat.
