STRADIVARIUS bids to win back the crown he relinquished last year, when connections instead opted for a tilt at the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. John Gosden's charge suffered defeat in the Royal Ascot Gold Cup earlier in the season, but bounced back in fine style at York, holding off Spanish Mission to win the Yorkshire Cup by a head.
I was all over Spanish Mission that day. I feared Stradivarius' time was up following that lengthy defeat at Ascot and Spanish Mission is high-quality, improving stayer. Frankie Dettori's mount engaged in a furious fight with his younger rival down the Knavesmire, and just when I thought my luck was in, Stradivarius got back up under the shadow of the post.
That battling victory proved Stradivarius still had the stomach for the scrap, and he's far from finished at the highest level. Usually, when a favourite is odds-on, I'll look for a reason to take him on. However, on this occasion, there are no better options.
Trueshan won't run on fast ground, especially when he has to give Stradivarius two pounds at the weights. Rodrigo Diaz has 13 pounds to find on the favourite, and Nayef Road hasn't got within ten lengths of the winner on any of his last four starts.
The Grand Visr was beaten seven lengths at York and I can't see how he closes that gap. Eagles By Day is talented by very awkward, and the final runner, Alerta Roja has only run above Class Six company once over staying trips, and she was beaten that day.
