To avoid a clash with the FA Cup Final, the 2023 Epsom Derby will take place at 1:30pm on June 3rd. 14 colts were confirmed for this famous Classic on Thursday and the betting for this year's Derby is looking decidedly open.

2023 Epsom Derby Tips - Already Advised

I landed on SPREWELL at the ante-post stage and I remain hopeful that Jessica Harrington's colt will run a huge race.

Having been narrowly beaten on both of his juvenile outings, Sprewell got off the mark with a hard-fought victory over a mile at Naas. Shane Foley's mount then took in the Derby Trial at Leopardstown earlier this month, quickening up nicely at the two-furlong pole to put that race to bed.

Sprewell clearly progressed between his first and second runs this term and I see no reason why he won't have improved again for that victory at Leopardstown. Harrington's colt is by Churchill, who's progeny have excelled over a wide range of trips on all kinds of ground and his dam - herself a Group One winner over a mile-and-a-quarter - has produced several good-quality middle-distance horses.

Shane Foley's mount remains a 12/1 shot, the same price I took ante-post. At that price, Sprewell represents each-way value.

2023 Epsom Derby Tips - Final Selection

I toyed with the idea of either Artistic Star of Adelaide River as my final selection, as both look overpriced. However, the more I watch MILITARY ORDER'S victory at Lingfield, the more I feel like Charlie Appleby's star is the perfect fit for the Derby.

Military Order got off the mark on his final juvenile outing and made all to claim a commanding victory over a couple of decent sorts on his reappearance at Newbury. William Buick's mount then got the better of a game Waipiro in the Lingfield trial, where Military Order quickened to lead going into the straight and seemed to quicken again with a furlong to travel, putting clear daylight between himself and the runner-up.

For those who don't know, Military Order is a full brother to Adayar, who won the Derby from stall one in 2021. Buick's mount has been drawn nicely up in stall ten and a current price of 4/1 seems very fair indeed.
