The lead-up races to the Epsom Oaks are key, but the form isn't. Don't worry if a runner finished well down the track in their latest start before the Oaks.
Unlike other Classic races, the fillies competing in the Oaks don't need to possess winning form to take out the feature.
The Epsom Oaks is one of five Classic races in the UK and it's the second oldest of the Classic races after the St. Leger.
It's the middle leg of the Triple Crown (1000 Guineas/St. Leger) and it has been one of the biggest races on the European racing calendar for many years.
Enable, Minding and Ouija Board have all won the Epsom Oaks and bettors are always presented with a great betting field in June.

Epsom Oaks history
The Oaks was named after an estate called The Oaks, which was leased by the 12th Earl of Derby.
First run in 1779, the Oaks, known as the Oakes Stakes, was won by Bridget which was owned by Lord Derby.
The race is run at Epsom Downs, but during the wars it was run at Newmarket and titled the New Oaks Stakes.
Frank Buckle won the Oaks on nine occasions in the early stages of the race. His first win came in 1797 with Nike and his last winner came 26 years later with Zinc.
Robert Robson was the leading trainer of his time and he managed to win the Oaks on 13 occasions. Some of his highlight wins came with Zinc, Wings and Music.
Known as the Emperor of Trainers, Robson was known for his ability to train Classic winners and he also trained seven Derby winners.
Enable ran the quickest Oaks time in 2017 (2:34.13) and it was widely considered as one of the best thoroughbreds in the world.
Pretty Polly was the shortest-odds winner in 1904, paying only 8/100. She subsequently had the Pretty Polly Stakes named after it.

Aidan O'Brien has dominated the Oaks of late with six winners since scoring with Shahtoush in 1998.
The Irish trainer has since won with Imagine, Alexandrova, Was, Qualify and Minding, but he didn't have much on Henry Cecil, who won it eight times before sadly passing away in 2013.
Ryan Moore is always a jockey to follow in the big races and he has won the Oaks on two occasions. They came aboard Snow Fairy in 2010 and Minding in 2016.
Punters can often get good odds for some quality fillies. It's always hard to tell which fillies will handle the staying distance, but punters were able to get 6/1 about Enable in 2017.
Minding went at much shorter odds of 1/1 the year prior, but Fastnet Rock filly Qualify won at massive odds of 80/1, despite being trained out of the O'Brien stables.
Unlike most of the Classic races in the UK, the fillies don't need to have placed or won at their last start to be considered a winning chance.
2013 winner Talent finished fifth in the Yorkshire Oaks prior to winning and quite incredibly, every runner that finished behind it in the 2013 Oaks hadn't finished better than third in their previous runs.
Look for the runners that have had the miles put into their legs.
Epsom Oaks lead-up races
The regional Oaks and Derby trial races are the best form guides for the Epsom Oaks.
Races such as the Yorkshire Oaks and Irish Guineas are good lead-up races for the testing distance.
Not every filly can see out the 2420m distance so finding horses that have competed over that distance is a positive.
Races commonly used as lead-ups:
- 1000 Guineas Trial
- Fred Darling Stakes
- Pretty Polly Stakes
- Lingfield Oaks Trial
- Fillies' Trial Stakes
- Irish 1000 Guineas
