Glorious Goodwood Day 2 Tips - Seven ITV selections on Sussex Stakes day

Here are our tips on day two of Glorious Goodwood.

Secret State is the firm favourite as he bids for a four-timer. Charlie Appleby's colt has top-weight to contend with and several dangerous rivals will line up against the market leader.

One of those is SURREY MIST, who was only beaten two lengths behind Secret State at Royal Ascot. George Baker's London Gold Cup runner-up stayed on after getting outpaced over ten furlongs at Ascot last time out. Surrey Mist is seven pounds better off with the market leader and Hollie Doyle will be pleased with her draw in stall five.

The bookies have gone 5/1 the field for this 17-runner renewal of the Oak Tree Stakes, so this shouldn't be too difficult to solve. We can look to a useful draw trend to narrow down the field, though. No horse has ever won this Group Three from a stall wider than 10, so Heredia, Soft Whisper and Bounce The Blues could be inconvenienced by their wide draws.

Placed perfectly to mount a challenge from stall four is the speedy PRIMO BACIO, who finished last of six on her reappearance here at Goodwood in the Conqueror Fillies Stakes. Ed Walker's filly bounced back to form with a solid third behind Saffron Beach at Royal Ascot and did alright in the Falmouth Stakes last time out, when giving plenty of weight to the three three-year-olds who beat her. Seven furlongs, on good ground, around a track like Goodwood racecourse should really suit.

I'm also going to have an each-way punt on HELLO YOU, who got stuck in traffic when she finished a close fourth in the Prestige Stakes here last year. David Loughnane's filly, who beat Cachet in the 2021 Rockfel Stakes, ran reasonably well in a quality renewal of the Jersey Stakes last time out and should be much happier back within her own sex. 18/1 is too tempting for me to pass up.

It's hard to look beyond ROCKET RODNEY, who won a maiden over course-and-distance before heading on to Royal Ascot.

Geroge Scott's charge picked up well from off a strong pace in the Windsor Castle and was only beaten a neck by Little Big Bear as the two pulled clear of Eddie's Boy. Rocket Rodney thrashed Eddie's Boy again in the Dragon Stakes, where Danny Muscatt's mount again displayed a smart turn-of-foot to win by two comfortable lengths.

Eddie's Boy will have competition for the early lead, as Walbank, Studio City and Dickieburd have shown a liking for front-running. A fast pace will definitely suit Rockey Rodney, who could be very hard to thwart once he shifts into top gear.

LYRICAL LADY brings some excellent seasonal form into this handicap. Hughie Morrison's filly finished a close second to Phantasy Mac at Nottingham, before making the most of her age allowance when thrashing some decent older rivals at Salisbury in June.

Despite her rating of just 78 - some 22 pounds inferior to the likes of Grande Dame, Oscula and Heredia - Lyrical Lady didn't look out of her depth when fourth in the Coral Distaff last time out. Morrison's filly returns to handicap company today and could be well-treated running off this official mark of 89.

THE PLATINUM QUEEN comfortably beat a future winner on debut at Ripon, before heading into the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot. Richard Fahey's filly got off to a terrible start that day and her late progress was only good enough for 13th.

Oisin Orr's mount bounced back from that defeat with an easy triumph at York, where The Platinum Queen made all and beat an odds-on favourite by four lengths. The market leader sits 12 pounds clear of her closest rival in the ratings here. 11/8 won't last for long.
