2021 Nassau Stakes Runners

Just three five-year-olds have managed to win the Nassau Stakes in the last 50 years, but that hasn't stopped the bookmakers from making Audarya the favourite, James Fanshawe's star won the Filly & Mare Turf at the Breeders' Cup in the autumn, and returned to action with a fine second behind Love in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes.

Fellow five-year-old, Lady Bowthorpe steps up to ten furlongs for the first time on Thursday. William Jarvis' flag-bearer has been knocking on the door over a mile this season, and opened her campaign with a nine-furlong triumph at Newmarket. Very soft ground, however, does bring her stamina into question.

Three-year-olds are by far the most successful age group in this contest, winning 20 of the last 20 renewals. Aidan O'Brien throws two Classic winners into the mix, with Prix de Diane winner Joan Of Arc being joined by Empress Josephine, who pipped her stablemate to the post in the Irish 1000 Guineas.

Zeyaadah got the better of Technique when they met in the Hoppings Fillies Stakes at Newcastle last time out. Both now return to Group One company, having been thrashed in the Epsom Oaks, and the betting suggests they have plenty to find to get involved.

2021 Nassau Cup Tips

The record of older mares in the Nassau Stakes is fairly offputting. Both Audarya and Lady Bowthorpe have done their best work on better ground too, so I don't really fancy either of the two five-year-olds.

Although Empress Josephine got the better of JOAN OF ARC in the Irish 1000 Guineas, I think the best horse finished second that day. Joan Of Arc was up with the pace throughout and engaged in a furious battle with No Speak Alexander down the home straight. Just when Ryan Moore's mount looked to got the race sewn up, Seamie Heffernan came flying home from off the pace on Empress Josephine and nabbed Joan Of Arc under the shadow of the post.

Like Ryan Moore did at the Curragh, Iortiz Mendizabal gave Joan Of Arc a positive ride in the Prix de Diane. O'Brien's filly made hard work of it, wandering a little when she first came under pressure. Once they passed the furlong pole, though, Joan Of Arc really knuckled down and she was doing her best work as she crossed the line a comfortable winner.

Joan Of Arc is a full sister to stars like Gleneagles, Marvellous and Happily, who won seven Group Ones between them over seven furlongs and a mile. While none of her siblings really convinced when stepped up to ten furlongs, the way Joan Of Arc finished her race at Chantilly suggests this could be her best trip and there's clearly more progression left in her locker. She'll be my Glorious Goodwood tip.

Verdict

With question marks next to both the older horses, I'm backing Joan Of Arc to hand Aidan O'Brien his fifth victory in the Nassau Stakes.
