Cloth Cap has again been slashed at the head of the Grand National betting, after jockey Tom Scudamore claimed his mount was a worthy favourite.
When the weights for the Grand National were announced, Cloth Cap was as long as 14/1 with some firms. A sparkling victory in the Premier Chase at Kelso saw the Ladbrokes Trophy winner slashed into 6/1 favouritism. That price disappeared this week, though, as Coral cut Cloth Cap again, listing Jonjo O'Neill's star as a 4/1 shot.
"Cloth Cap has had an excellent season and it could get even better for his connections as he continues to be supported for the Grand National where he is the clear favourite," said Coral's John Hill.
"If the support continues behind the Ladbrokes Trophy winner, he could start as one of the shortest priced Grand National favourites in recent years,"
A fresh wave of support arrived for Cloth Cap after jockey, Tom Scudamore gave his mount a ringing endorsement during an interview with the Racing Post. Scudamore agreed that Cloth Cap was more than worthy of his short price, and would be even shorter had he not been running in the world's most famous horse race.
"It's a lovely position to be in, a very privileged position to be riding the favourite in the National," Scudamore said during the interview.
"I'd much rather be on the favourite rather than under the radar on one of the outsiders. He's favourite for a very good reason."
"In any other handicap he'd be even shorter than that if he was 14lb well in so it's up to the bookmakers to decide what is a fair price and what isn't but I'm hoping that come that Saturday evening, he'll be looking like he was a massive price."
"We got a good start at Newbury and he just took each fence as it came. It was a similar sort of scenario at Kelso but he doesn't have to make the running."
"He was up in the van when he ran well in the Scottish National but I wouldn't just put it down to the fact that he's been able to make the running that the improvement has come about. He's matured mentally this season and he's gone from strength to strength."
Another potential runner who's been supported recently is Any Second Now, who was put up by Tom Segal as one of his ante-post punts for the Grand National.
Any Second Now is now the 10/1 second-favourite for the 2021 Grand National with Coral. Burrows Saint, Kimberlite Candy and Minella Times come next, with Segal's second selection, Secret Reprieve sitting on 16/1.
