Aintree Tips - Saturday 9th April

Race 1 - Handicap Hurdle Tips

I'll kick off my Grand National day tips with a couple of each way punts in this competitive handicap. Rachael Blackmore was the star of the show 12 months ago, and she's been booked to ride EMITOM, who's now dropped down to an appealing handicap mark.

Warren Greatrex's eight-year-old finished second to Champ in the Sefton back in 2019 and promised to go right to the top of the staying ranks. Sadly, Emitom has only managed to win once in 11 starts since then, but Blackmore's mount has run up to a decent level over hurdles and fences this season and a mark of 135 is clearly very lenient.

I'm also keen on the chances of PARTY BUSINESS, who was hampered badly twice during the Martin Pipe and stayed on up Cleeve Hill to finish fifth. Ian Williams' novice could still be very well-handicapped and three miles on decent ground could be right up his street.

Race 2 - Mersey Novices' Hurdle Tips

With four paid places up for grabs and a field of 13 to pick from, I am tempted to have an each-way bet. Yet, the more I look at this race, the more I fancy THREE STRIPE LIFE.

Gordon Elliott's six-year-old was part of my tips for the Ballymore as he stepped up to two-and-a-half-miles for the first time, and only Sir Gerhard was good enough to beat him. Davy Russell's mount is going to make an excellent staying chaser next season and I fancy he'll be too classy for this field, if that run at Cheltenham hasn't left a mark.

Race 3 - Maghull Novices' Chase Tips

It's very hard to side against Edwardstone, who won the Arkle last time out with a little left up his sleeve. I won't be having a single bet at 8/11, though.

I may have a reverse forecast between the favourite and Third Time Lucki, as I think they're the two best options, but apart from that, I won't be having much of a bet.

Race 4 - Liverpool Hurdle Tips

Danny Mullins gave Flooring Porter another excellent ride at Cheltenham. Mullins got a breather into his mount at the top of the hill, stacking the field up behind him, before kicking clear in the final few furlongs to retain their Stayers' Hurdle crown.

If Ashdale Bob goes forward and pesters the favourite, it won't be as easy to dictate the tempo and Flooring Porter may not have everything his own way. Thyme Hill is a consistent sort who should be involved in the finish, while Champ could just as easily win by ten lengths as finish last of the nine.

I'm going to have a wild punt on MOLLY OLLYS WISHES, who is still improving as a staying hurdler. Dan Skelton's mare showed plenty of gears to win over two miles at Wetherby in the autumn, and clung on after being left out in front way too soon to win the three mile Grade Two for mares at Ascot in January.

Roksana placed twice in this race for the Skelton's during her career. Molly Ollys Wishes may not quite be as classy as her former stablemate, but I still think there's value to be found backing this mare each way at 25/1.

Race 5 - Betway Handicap Chase Tips

I'm not usually one to back runners at short prices in big handicap chases, but there's no getting away from the fact that SHAN BLUE is very well treated.

Dan Skelton's eight-year-old was handed an RPR of 166 for his performance in the Charlie Hall Chase, where he fell at the last when miles clear of the field. His run in the Ryanair Chase wasn't great, but Skelton wouldn't be running Shan Blue if he hadn't come out of that race well and he could be very hard to beat as he makes his handicap debut off a mark of 148.

Grumpy Charley E/W4:15pm Betway Handicap Chase (Grade 3) 3m1fGET 25/1 HERE

I also think it's worth giving another chance to GRUMPY CHARLEY, who was pulled up in the Ultima at Cheltenham.

Chris Honour's stable star was very slowly away that day and didn't jump fluently enough to make up any ground. Bryan Carver pulled his mount up before the third-last, meaning he didn't have a particularly taxing race and Grumpy Charley has shown enough form this season to suggest this revised mark of 140 is lenient.

I'm happy to let horses win festival bumpers at short prices. I'd much rather have an each-way punt, especially when there are five paid places up for grabs, and the one who appeals most to me in the finale is WESTERN ZEPHYR.

This strapping Westerner gelding won a point-to-point by 25 lengths for Francesca Poste and made all to score on his debut under rules for Charlie Longsdon back in January. The second and third from that bumper at Huntingdon have both come out and won since, and the fourth was beaten narrowly on his next start, so Western Zephyr's form is looking solid. He could go well at a decent price.
