Although he has to carry almost a stone more on his back this time around, there's a very good chance that ANY SECOND NOW can go two better than last year and win the 2022 Grand National.

Mark Walsh's mount set off behind the leaders and jumped the first ten fences nicely. Any Second Now blundered his way through the fence just after Valentines, but seemed to have recovered well. Then, at the 12th flight, Walsh's mount was badly hampered by the falling Double Shuffle, and was shuffled back from fourth to around 20th along the inside rail.

A series of flawless jumps saw Any Second Now reclaim a share of fifth jumping Bechers' Brook for the second time. Making up so much ground in a short space of time was always going to take its toll in the closing stages and Any Second Now could only finish third.

Ted Walsh gave his ten-year-old two spins over hurdles at the start of the season. Any Second Now limbered up for his return to the Grand National with a brilliant victory in the Bobby Jo Chase, beating Escaria Ten by a nose when conceding eight pounds to his Aintree rival.

That incident at the 12th cost Any Second Now at least 12 lengths last year. Given he crossed the line just eight lengths behind Minella Times, it wouldn't be much of a stretch to say he would have won the 2021 Grand National had he enjoyed a smooth passage through the race.

Ted Walsh will be praying for a trouble-free run this time around. If Mark Walsh can keep his nose clean, avoid the fallers and jump fluently, Any Second Now will be there-or-thereabouts.

Tragedy struck the Tizzard family last season, when Colin's daughter, Kim Gingell lost her battle with cancer. Kim was an integral part of the team at Venn Farm, and her loss coincided with the worst season the Tizzards had endured on the track since 2014.

Despite his trainer's poor form, FIDDLERONTHEROOF enjoyed a decent novice chase campaign in 2020/21. The 2020 Tolworth winner only won one of his seven starts, but did finish second in three Grade Twos and the Brown Advisory Chase, where he crossed the line six lengths adrift of Monkfish.

Fiddlerontheroof announced his intentions for the season with a fine victory in the Colin Parker Memorial Chase up at Carlisle in October. Brendan Powell's mount was then beaten half-a-length in the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury, before producing a similarly impressive weight-carrying performance to finish second to Fortescue in the Swinley Chase at Ascot.

Tizzard's eight-year-old is yet to win over three miles. As was last year's Grand National winner Minella Times, and Fiddlerontheroof's placed form over three miles reads really well. Powell will be having his first ride in the Grand National on Saturday. I doubt whether this three-time Cheltenham Festival winner will be overawed by the occasion and I'm sure his father - who rode 1988 Grand National winner Rhyme 'n' Reason - will have imparted as much wisdom as possible.

Fiddlerontheroof will be Colin Tizzard's final runner in National, before he hands the keys to Venn Farm over to son, Joe at the end of the season. The Grand National is all about stories and victory in this most famous of races would be the perfect way to end Colin's magnificent career as a trainer.

After looking like he'd completely lost his way, GOOD BOY BOBBY - who was once favourite to win a Grade One as a novice - has gotten his career back on track.

Nigel Twiston-Davies' nine-year-old was backed into favouritism for the Listed Handicap Chase at Wetherby on his reappearance in October and made all to win with a little left up his sleeve. Following a narrow defeat to the classy Aye Right in the Rehearsal at Newcastle, Good Boy Bobby held off a pair of hardy stayers in Lord Du Mesnil and Top Ville Ben to land the Rowland Meyrick with 11-8 on his back.

Good Boy Bobby carried 11-12 into the Coral Trophy at Kempton last time out. Sam Twiston-Davies' mount recovered well from an early blunder and sat fourth turning for home, but the weight began to tell coming down the straight and Good Boy Bobby was eased down in the closing stages. That was still a decent showing under top-weight in a big handicap. I'm confident Nigel Twiston-Davies' charge will be much more competitive in the National.

We've seen ten, eleven and even thirteen-year-olds run their way into the places in recent Grand Nationals, so age shouldn't put you off backing Willie Mullins' experienced handicapper, BRAHMA BULL at a hugely tempting price.

Mullins' eleven-year-old was beaten just three lengths in the Kerry National earlier in the season, before following Galvin home in the Grade Three Irish Daily Star at Punchestown. Brahma Bull then stayed on from out the back to finish one place behind Fiddlerontheroof in the Ladbrokes Trophy, where he was forced to carry a top weight of 11-12.

Willie Mullins gave Brahma Bull a prep-run for Aintree in the Cross Country at Cheltenham. Mullins' charge was still traveling comfortably in the midfield as the field approached the 20th fence, but a slight blunder and a sharp right turn immediately after that fence saw Brian Hayes thrown from the saddle.

Brahma Bull is a Grade Three winner over fences and has carried big weights to victory in handicaps on a number of occasions. From his 16 starts in conventional chases, Mullins' chaser has finished inside the top three places on ten occasions. The three times he has failed to complete a race, the ground was either soft or heavy. Drying ground at Aintree will be right up Brahma Bull's street and he's a lively outsider to look out for on Grand National day at Aintree.
