The first Classics of the 2024 flat season is just around the corner. The 1000 Guineas betting is much more open than the colt's equivalent, and punters are now busy attempting to separate Ylang Ylang and Fallen Angel at the head of the market.

To try and help you out, we've taken a look through the recent history of the 1000 Guineas to try and find out which is the best trial for this famous Classic.

The Fillies' Mile has produced the most winners of the 1000 Guineas in the last decade, with five winners going on to score in this Classic having run in that Grade One at Newmarket.

The Moyglare Stud Stakes returned a score of four, as did the Debutante Stakes, which is seen as the key lead-up race for the Moyglare. Interestingly, the last three winners of the 1000 Guineas had run in that season's Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Six of the last ten winners had taken in a prep run that season, and two of those six ran in the Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket. Seven of the last eight winners had experience running on the Rowley Mile and 2018 champion, Billesdon Brook is the only winner to have been rated lower than 106.

Three races stood clear of their rivals in the battle to be the best lead-up race for the 1000 Guineas. The Fillies' Mile and Moyglare Stakes both scored 11, with the Debutante Stakes one behind on ten.

The Nell Gwyn Stakes achieved a score of five. As did the 1000 Guineas Trial held at Leopardstown in April, which performed considerably better than the Colt's equivalent of that race did when looking at the best trial for the 2000 Guineas. The May Hill Stakes, held at Doncaster the previous spring, also accounted for five winners and places.

The Rockfell and Cheveley Park Stakes came in at four, along with the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. The Lowther, Albany and Oh So Sharp Stakes scored three, as did the Silver Flash Stakes, which is held at Leopardstown.

Only 3 of the 30 winners and placers analysed were rated below 106 before taking part in the 1000 Guineas, and one of those was unrated after just two maiden starts. 80% of the winners and placed had experience running at Newmarket, and 80% had finished no worse than third on the final start before running in the 1000 Guineas.
