The first Classic of the season takes place at Newmarket on May 1st, as a field of top-quality colts do battle in the 2000 Guineas. This historic race has been staged at Newmarket since 1809, and the 2021 renewal is shaping up to be an absolute cracker.

We've taken a look through the ante-post betting and picked out our best 2000 Guineas tips.

2021 2000 Guineas Tips – Leading Chances

Aidan O’Brien has saddled five of the last ten winners of the 2000 Guineas, and he’s bound to fire a couple of arrows at this Classic. St Mark’s Basilica had looked a certainty to be part of Aidan O'Brien's squad for Newmarket, but he didn't feature in the final field of 15.

Wembley finished ahead of St Mark’s Basilica in the National Stakes, and went down fighting behind his stablemate when they clashed again in the Dewhurst. Although he only managed to win one of his six juvenile starts, Wembley showed great consistency throughout 2020, and there’s little separating the Ballydoyle big guns. After it was confirmed that Ryan Moore had chosen to ride Wembley, he was immediately backed into favouritism.

Charlie Appleby has already sent Master Of The Seas out twice this season. William Buick’s mount could only finish second out in Meydan, where he ran into traffic problems turning in. Master Of The Seas made up for that defeat with a hard-fought victory in the Craven Stakes here earlier this month, and he’s got proven form over course and distance.

One Ruler powered clear of Van Gogh to win the Autumn Stakes last season, and ended 2020 with a narrow defeat to Mac Swiney in the Vertem Trophy. After Master Of The Seas won the Craven, One Ruler was cut into favouritism for the 2000 Guineas, as many think he’s ahead of his stablemate in the Godolphin pecking order. However, in recent days, One Ruler has drifted right out to 11/1, which puts a big negative next to his name.

Also sitting at the business end of the betting is Thunder Moon, who strode clear of his rivals to win the National Stakes on just his second career start. Joseph O’Brien’s colt then finished third in the Dewhurst, and can count himself a little unlucky, as the soft ground clearly went against him that day.

Mutasaabeq absolutely destroyed two well-regarded sorts out of Godolphin and Ballydoyle on his reappearance on the Rowley Mile. Shadwell then decided to stump up the supplementary see to throw Mutasaabeq into this Classic, and Charlie Hills' charge has to have a chance.

It had been rumoured that Battleground was to be saved for the Curragh or a crack at the French Guineas. So, it was a slight surprise when Aidan O'Brien confirmed his Vintage Stakes winner in the field, and he's been well-backed ever since.

Stablemate Van Gogh is also likely to attract support. He too looked more likely to be saved for France, having scored well on heavy ground at Saint-Cloud back in the Autumn, but O'Brien has decided the conditions of the 2000 Guineas would suit him.

Chindit ground out a narrow victory in the Greenham Stakes on his return to action, and would be worthy of a run in the Guineas. However, he didn’t seem to handle the undulations of the track when finishing down the field in the Dewhurst, and I’m not sure this step up in trip will really suit.

As could Lucky Vega, if Jessica Harrington decided to send her colt over to Newmarket next month. Lucky Vega was backed into favouritism for the National Stakes, but found a luckless passage that day and could only finish fifth. Harrington’s charge then finish a close second to a natural sprinter in the Middle Park Stakes.

2021 2000 Guineas Tips – Final Verdict

18+ only. Gambling can be addictive. Play responsibly.

It’s very hard to separate the leading contenders in the betting. Results last season suggest they’re very evenly matched. My preference would be WEMBLEY (Backed at 6s now 4/1), who finished second in both the National Stakes and the Dewhurst, despite plenty going against him in both races.

Wayne Lordan’s mount was still sitting out the back with a furlong-and-a-half to go at the Curragh, and had to circumnavigate the whole field just to mount a challenge behind Thunder Moon. Wembley was again forced to sit wide after being drawn in stall two in the Dewhurst, and did very well just to get within a length of St Mark’s Basilica as they crossed the line.

Wembley is by the great Galileo – a name which has featured in the breeding of seven of the last ten 2000 Guineas winners. He also turned three on the 13th a January, making him two months older than St Mark’s Basilica and almost a full five months older than Thunder Moon, who wasn’t born until the 1st May.

Given who he’s trained by, his breeding and the results he posted as a juvenile, I think Wembley is a fantastic bet in the 2000 Guineas.

I’m also going to take a punt on LUCKY VEGA (Backed at 20s now 12/1), who’s been criminally overlooked in the current Newmarket betting. Jessica Harrington’s charge looked a star in the making when winning the Phoenix Stakes, and got no luck whatsoever when staying on for fifth in the National Stakes.

Lucky Vega went down to Supremacy on his final start in the Middle Park Stakes. However, considering that was over a shorter trip and came less than two weeks after his run in the National Stakes, that can be regarded as an excellent effort and Lucky Vega proved he could handle the undulations of the Rowley Mile.

By the great Lope De Vega and out of a dam sired by Cape Cross – who himself sired Classic winners like Sea The Stars, Golden Horn and Ouija Board – Lucky Vega’s breeding suggests he’ll stay a mile no problem. Jessica Harrington wouldn’t have wasted an entry in the 2021 Epsom Derby if she thought her star couldn’t even stay a mile.

Wembley ran really well throughout his juvenile campaign, and this son of Galileo remains open to plenty of improvement now stepped up to a mile.

I've also backed Lucky Vega, who won a Grade One as a juvenile and ran a cracker in last year's Middle Park Stakes. 20/1 was too good to turn down!
