With the Guineas Festival looming large on the horizon, Aidan O'Brien has spoken to the press about his 2021 crop of three-year-olds.

When it comes to the Classic races in Britain and Ireland, it often pays to follow Aidan O'Brien. The master of Ballydoyle has saddled five of the last 10 winners of the 2000 Guineas. In the fillies' division, O'Brien is even more dominant, winning six of the last nine renewals of the 1000 Guineas.

This week, O'Brien spoke exclusively to AtTheRaces and guided readers through his stable for the 2021 flat campaign.

Battleground

We are very happy with him. He was always a big horse, but he’s really after filling out over the winter. He’s nice and forward. He’s going through his work very easily at the moment. I couldn’t be happier with him.

It looks like he’ll go straight to the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. He doesn’t strike me as one that will want much further than a mile, but I couldn’t completely rule it out as we did end up going a mile-and-a-quarter with another War Front in Declaration Of War.

Duke Of Mantua

He ran well in the Madrid at the Curragh on Sunday. He was rated 99 over the winter and we had that race in mind for him for a while, but when the weights came out, he had been raised to 104, so he ended up carrying 10 stone which was a tough ask for a three-year-old on bad ground in March.

We thought he would improve from that run and he’s come out of it well. Better ground will be a help to him. He has plenty of pace, but he might get a mile. We’ll probably go to a Guineas trial with him next.

High Definition

He’s going very well and doing everything right. He was big and babyish last year, so we had always planned to only run him twice as a two-year-old. We were delighted with him in the Beresford, as we took our time with him and he did very well to win in the circumstances. He has a lovely, relaxed way of doing everything and gets over the ground very easily. He always gives you the impression that he has plenty left to give no matter what you are doing with him.

He’s forward and will be ready to start in a Derby trial. We were thinking about potentially going to the 2000 Guineas first with him, but we have plenty for that, so we are leaning towards the Epsom Derby trial route with him now. There’s no doubt that better ground will suit him.

Roman Empire

He’s done very well in physical terms and is going very well. He’s showing plenty of speed in his work and I’m not sure how far he’ll stay. He won on testing ground, but I’d say he’ll step up a good bit on better ground.

Sandhurst

He’s in good order and is forward. He isn’t too hard on himself at home, so it’s hard to know what’s in the locker with him. He looked a slow enough learner in his runs last year too, so he should keep improving with racing.

St Mark's Basilica

He’s in good order and we’re happy with how he progressed over the winter. The plan is to go straight to the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket with him. The experience that he got of the track in the Dewhurst can only be a help to him when he goes back there.

He’s a straightforward, honest-to-God horse that has a lovely mind. He’s so relaxed, he might give himself a chance to stay beyond a mile, but he’s never looked short of pace and a mile will be our focus with him for the time being.

Van Gogh

He’s done unbelievably well over the winter and we are very happy with him. He’s grown into a big powerful horse. We got loads of experience into him last year and his mind is very good. He’s working like a horse that has enough pace for a Guineas, but his profile would suggest he could stay a mile-and-a-half. He’ll definitely prefer better ground.

Wembley

We are very happy with his physical progress over the winter. He looks a miler to us and we’ll look to go straight to the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket with him. He shows a lot of speed in his work and I couldn’t be happier with him. The experience he got at Newmarket in the Dewhurst will stand to him when he goes back there. He wants good ground.

Joan Of Arc

We were very happy with her win on Sunday, and she will definitely step up from that. She’s an easy filly to train. Very natural. She’ll be very comfortable stepping up to a mile, but I’m not sure how much further than that she’ll stay. She’s a good-moving filly that will appreciate better ground. The 1000 Guineas trial at Leopardstown would be the logical next step for her.

Queens Speech

She’s a lovely filly that is fit and forward. Whether we start her in a Guineas trial or go straight up to a mile with her, she’s ready to go. She has a big action and handled soft ground well on her debut, but we’ve always felt that she’ll handle better ground too.

Santa Barbara

She’s done unbelievably well in physical terms over the winter. She looks like a five-year-old colt. She goes through her work unbelievably well. She shows loads of speed and always worked with an awful lot of class.

Whether we start her in the Guineas trial at Leopardstown or go straight to the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, we haven’t decided yet. We won’t over-race her, we’ll keep her runs to a minimum if we can, but she shows an unbelievable amount of class at home.

In terms of her stamina, she’s by Camelot, so that will give her a chance to stay a mile-and-a-quarter or maybe further, but she does show a lot of pace. She looked very pacey on her debut and she does that at home all the time. She just toys with horses in her work. We’re very excited by her.
